Because some religions don't like it's followers to think for themselves. They would rather have everybody think like one another.

I don't know that it specifically discourages it. I've never seen any dogma to that extent, but...
I can see where you'd get that impression, in that Adam and Eve supposedly had free will, so they had the ability to "choose." If we have the freedom to choose, then we have the capability of choosing "wrong."
Hard-line, fundamentalists tend to push the concept of living by "the Word," meaning that you don't "need" to choose. According to them, all the answers to life are between the covers of the Bible.
This is how "self-ordained" ministers gain so much control, because the "followers" seek a leader; someone who will give them "enlightenment."
It's so much easier for some NOT to think; they would prefer their answers handed to them in simple black and white on a platter.

Not all religion discourages free thought. I know Unitarians, Episcopalians, Reform Jews, Quakers and many other people of faith who consider themselves to be freethinkers.

I didn't realize it did. I'm a Christian. Although I've not exactly been encouraged to ask questions by some of my fellow Christians, MOST of them are all for it. They are also free thinkers. I've had some VERY enlightening conversations with religious people.

Religion declares 'free-will' as the determinent of good and evil.
Atheism declares the modality of mind control, body control, population control, disease control, age control, weight control...all with pills, cosmetology, exercise, vitamins and other 'pipe-dreams' sold on your Donald Trump tv set.
