Well, for one thing, there have been a number of cases in which the person on Death Row was exonerated after a new court looked at the actions of the police and prosecution, and at DNA evidence. The system is fallible and justice for poorer, or mentally handicapped people (of which Texas has executed 3) tends to be unequal at best. For another, it costs the taxpayers nearly 10 times as much money to administer a death penalty verdict as it does a term of life sentence. Why do you want to pay more than you need to pay, just so that you can support a fallible judicial process?

Overall I am proponent of the death penalty. It has two major flaws though. One is poor oversight. It needs to be monitored in such a way as to reduce the possibility of error to zero. Once that is done the other flaw can be addressed. Waiting twenty years to be executed is not appropriate. A year or two is about the limit. Convict the person, review the case and appeal once. After that, execute them with no further delay.

I hear ya, too bad we have to wait for years why they take our tax dollars to appeal something most admitted to doing any way. It costs $28,000 a year to house and feed a convict but $0.20 to resolve the problem.
