I think there's a surprising level of misunderstanding on them - that you have to be uneducated to have them, you automatically catch a disease if you have them, everyone who gets them hates them or themselves, you can never get a job, etc.
I've mentioned this before, but this is nearly identical to other popular culture & social movements over the years. The old guard doesn't like long hair, piercings (men or women), so on and so forth. Rather than just state their opinions, they feel the need to dis the "enemy". Some don't; those who just comment it's not for them, kudos to you. It would be nice if you weren't in the minority, but thanks regardless.
In the end, the haters die and the culture moves on. The activity doesn't get adopted by everyone, but eventually it's seen as no big deal.

OK I want to first tell the first guy who posted here that you are a ****! I am both a "biker" and a "sailor" but neither of those reason's are why I get tattoos. Please don't come in here spouting your filth to those of us who really ejnoy and age old past time. If you want to type garbage to uneducated fools why don't you f*ck off to Polls and Surveys or better still f*ck off this site altogether! Idiot.
Ok rant over! What do I think about tattoos - I think that tattooing is a fine art and anyone who has taken the time to go through an apprenticeship and worked thier @ss off to become a respected tattoo artist deserves the highest praise. I have lots of tattoo work and am currently paying attention to both of my arm sleeves.
I went to college, I have had a good paying job for the last 17 years, I have a wife, house, blah, blah I work out at sea for half the year and then the other half on land here in Miami. I am not some drunken fool who goes into a tattoo parlour in Mexico to get a butterfly on my hip because it's the in thing to do right now. I am serious about my skin art and want to express myself in a way I feel represents the gravity of the reasons why I get the peices I do. It is a painful process to get a proper tattoo and Bhuddism tells us that life is pain. It is a mark of perseverance and acheivement. It is a mark of suffering for the things you hold the deepest and the closest in your heart. My tattooing is not a fad, or a passing phase. Like someone said ealier, it is like a marrige and I love all my inked wives for various reasons.

I think its a sensitive topic with a lot of stereo typing.
Foremost, there are three categories most people fall into:
Hate tattoos and find them cheap, disgusting, or sin, those who don't mind them; and those who love them or find them intriguing.
The stereotypes that follow tattoos I have found come from those who are uneducated in the art of tattooing, or, those who have religious standpoints that are against tattooing.
That being said, what do I think personally? I think they are an amazing art form. Now, I am not a fan of gang based/related tattoos. I truly believe that the quote "to each their own" fits when it comes to tattoing. Even though I may not be a "fan" of certain tattoos, it is not my place to make judgement upon them.
I love my own tattoos, as I have 6 of them, and couldn't picture life without them. They are mine, they each mean something, and the latest work depicts what has gone on in my life, and the triumphs we as a family have gone through. They are beautiful, well thought out, and tasteful tattoos.

OK. First let me say that I am a very classy lady and yes I have tattoos. I am not lower class, nor am I uneducated.
Second, they do not "shoot ink into your veins." If people want to answer questions, they should know the facts instead of making them up as they go.
I think a few small strategically placed tattoos can be attractive and add a little mystery to a person. But I am not against people not having tattoos. Just the people that don't know the facts and make assumptions.

I used to hate them because i'd see the same cheap tacky looking tattoo's all the time i.e Winnie the Pooh, Tramp stamps, roses. I now love tattoo's since seeing how good they can turn out if you don't go for the tacky off the wall designs and get a really good artist. I think it's best to design your own tattoo it's more meaningful. I like either small girly tattoo's or full back pieces or full/1/2 sleeves.

I think it is an individual person's choice. I have one but you would never know it unless I showed you (most likely not ever gonna happen) or told you. So I think one or two small tattoos are not a big deal as long as they are discreetly hidden. Now I have a hard time with people who don't think before they get a tattoo and they put something completely stupid and meaningless on themsleves, especially when its someplace that everyone can see. And people who tattoo their whole bodies, thats a whole different ballgame...

I think everyone has to decide for him-or herself whether to tattoo or not.
I love watching Miami Ink and understand better the reasons why people want a tattoo.
I admire those who have the ability to tattoo. To have the art work turn out so well on a movable medium... I can't draw anywhere near that well on paper that holds still and doesn't have the imperfections that skin has.
To each his own.

I like tattoos....I like them from an artistic point of view. My deal is that people talk about tattooing as if it's something new.....Tattoos have been around for thousands and thousands of years..... We have examples of mummies with tattoos and even the iceman found frozen in the Alps was tattooed. When did it become bad/criminal to get ink? Some of the smartest people I know have tattoos. Some of the richest people in the world have tattoos. I really dont see what the problem is. It's not like we are going to knock you out and put tattoos on you when you are unconcious. It you don't like them.....don't get one. Why do you have to act like an *** about it. I don't care for cats as pets but you don't see me in pets bashing catlovers......
I really don't understand people like casapulla. It must be sad to go through life like that....filled with so much vile and hate.....

I like tattoos. I have 5. To me, they represent different milestones in my life- becoming an adult, the birth of my daughter, a liberating breakup. I enjoy talking to people about their ink and finding out the stories behind why they chose that particular piece.
