My cats know I'm giving them love. I mush them up big time and they know. No question about it.

I am pretty sure my cats know that I am just giving them affection. My rescue kitty, will sit on my chest and wait for me to purse my lips and give me a "kiss" with her lips before grooming my cheek.
My parents beagles run over to me if I ask for a kiss and snuggle up to me while I kiss their heads.
I think animals are smarter than people give them credit for and know when the people in the pack are showing affection.

... I like to think they do understand we're 'loving on 'em', lightningdreams2004. Whether it's feline or canine, when they lick our hands and/or face, it's usually when they're happy, and being affectionate. I'm a certified cat and dog smoocher, and usually I kind of 'swipe' my smooch across the top of their lil' furry heads - not too hard, or too loud (they have very sensitive ears, and one of those big 'kissy' noises must be awful), and then a thorough scratching about the neck and cheeks - puppy/kitty nirvana has been achieved..! :) ...

they do not understand your kisses they have no idea whats going on, but they enjoy it anyway cause they can tell by the tone of your voice if you like them or if you are mad at them.

They understand it as attention, and possibly dominance.
