My therapist says I have a hard time with my "sense of self" and have "low ego strength" and I "let others project their stuff onto me." I am trying to understand what this means. Can anyone give me some insight or examples to help me understand this?

I'm by no means an expert, but I think it means you don't speak your mind often enough. You get taken advantage of and the choices you make aren't really yours. If that's the case...

Maybe there is someone in your life that dominates you and instead of standing up for yourself and telling that person how you really feel or what you really think you just go along with whatever they say because you are afraid you could be wrong.

Or maybe it's not just one person. Are you too afraid of what others might think of you to be who you really want to be so you try and be as much like everyone else as you can?

Be true to yourself and stand up for yourself. No one has the right to tell you what to do or how to think.

Have you ever heard the phrase "misery loves company"? Well, that sort of says it all. People will tend to bring you down with them if you allow them to and you don't have a strong sense of self worth. Try to surround yourself with positive people who will be a good influence in your life. You have to decide that you are worthy of having a good life and having positive self esteem. Don't let others drag you down with them. Think and feel for yourself. You are worthy of a good life and your own emotions.

It means it's time to get a new therapist. Prove him/her wrong by not letting him/her tell you what you feel.

Seriously, it just means you care too much about what other people think. I still think it's kind of a dumb thing to say.

Your therapist means you let other people control you basically. You don't stand up for yourself, you allow others to do as they wish to you. I have the same problem. It sucks. Sorry you have to go through this too.

It means you do not fully secure with who you are and likely seek approval from others to increase your sense of worth. You tend to not maintain boundaries in your relationships. You take on other people's problems as your own.

It means you are overly willing to accept others judgments of you or them tellling you how you feel or what you think or should think. Someone might tell you, for example, that you are too selfish - and even tho you may not be at all, you would tend to believe them and try to act less selfish. That.

It means you believe others' opinions over your self-opinion. I have a bit of the same problem, and am working to have my own opinions, and trusting myself over what other people say about me.
