There are several possibilities for what causes a white coating on the tongue, or THRUSH. The most common cause of a white coating is a candidal infection, which is caused by fungus. Thrush can also be caused by antibiotics or steroids that were inhaled for sinus or asthma issues. A white coating can also simply be the buildup of dead cells on the tongue. Finally, a white coating on the tongue may be caused by dehydration! If you aren't drinking enough water, it's possible that little pieces of food are sticking to your tongue! Simply drinking more water will remedy this condition so we suggest you try this first for a week or two and see if makes a difference

I have this on the back of my tongue and the dentist and Doctor said it was because I have sinus problems which causes a drip down the back of my throat. No, I don't have bad breath and I use a tongue scraper twice a day to keep it to a minimum.

I have never heard that this indicates bad breath, but I do have 2 children and in raising them, I have seen the white coating I think you are talking about and it is a condition called Thrush, it is not uncommon and is easily treated with a antibiotic, nothing extravacant usually a penicillin will take care of it, of course I am not a doctor this is just my opinion, thanks for the question, Kw

It could just mean that you have indigestion or have overdone it with drink. If either is true you may have bad breath but not necessarily. Just drink plenty of water and do eat much or drink alcohol for a day or two.
