Then where are all the laws listed? I don't always hear about the changes in laws, and I wouldn't even know what is illegal sometimes, or the penalties.I wouldn't know where to look.

I'm not talking about the common sense laws...those are a given, of course. I mean like the no smoking on the subway one(unless its posted) or guilty by association, or othersthat are not so common.

Most state laws may be researched by looking at the "Criminal Code of ."

My own state refers to that code as the "Code of Alabama 1975."

There are NOT "billions of laws" on the books as far as "criminal" laws and most issues involving certain violations, ie. smoking on a subway platform, etc., could be avoided by becoming a bit more vigilant. In my experience, any public area I've visited, be it a restaurant, store, business, hospital, library, or otherwise, have signs posted concerning the prohibition of smoking.

Then there are the "common sense" or other more frequently "used" laws such as "handicapped" parking spaces for those who are handicapped. Fire zones that are red colored and a no parking zone. A solid double yellow line means no passing.

There are a myriad of available resources for obtaining the laws of your state. One place to start would be your local district attorneys office or the local court house!

Just as a side note, the statement "Ignorance of the law..." is not a law!

Best wishes.

For the most part, it's pretty much common knowledge - murder, assault, rape, fraud, the usual drugs - all are illegal, have been for a good long time, and are likely to stay that way in the forseeable future. The cases where you are actually likely to fall afoul of a law you've never heard of are pretty uncommon.

But, if you still feel the need to educate yourself about all the possibilities, the Legal Code for a jursidiction will generally be published by it. I'm sure you could find a copy for your various applicable jurisdictions (local, state, federal) either by asking the appropriate law enforcement organization, checking your local library, or possibly even on-line.

Most of the laws that are enforced are pretty much common sense. If they arent most cops will give a little bit of room. Example, people smoking on an outdoor subway platform, and they are tourists from another country or even a different state, I'll give them a break....But if I see those same people a few days later doing the same thing, then its a ticket.

If you think something is wrong, or it just doesn't feel right, don't do it. Follow this rule and you won't get into trouble. I ask myself when in doubt, what would Jesus do, and I try my best to do that.
