There is no strange noises coming out. Just that the a/c works and stops works and stops. Anybody have any suggestions on what it could be? Thank you

You are low on freon, and your low pressure switch is opening the clutch circuit, which will prevent the AC from freezing up. You will also need to repair the leak before they can legally recharge the system.

Now what you can do is go to an auto supply store like autozone and buy a AC refill kit. It will have a hose with fittings and a gauge, and a bottle of freon 134A.

Does your heater do the same thing?
The heater and A/C use many of the same parts to function. (Blower motor, actuators, ducts, etc). If so, it could be anything. An actuator could be going out or a moving part could need lubrication. There are many more possibilities.

Debris can get in it and obstruct various moving parts as well as duct. If your mechanic says that is the problem, have them clean it out. This is common and luckily, usually the cheapest repair.

If the heater is fine, you have a narrower idea of what it is. See your mechanic, I wouldn't suggest you do this yourself.
A/C repairs can be very costly since it's not directly under the hood.

The best thing you can do is to take it to the shop and get it looked at. It could be a number of different things. It could be the compressor starting to go out, or the fan could be having trouble. Take it to the shop asap so your a/c doesn't completely die and you end up having to spend $500 on getting the whole thing replaced. Most places will look at your car for free, or at least a minimal fee, and they can give you advice once they find anything.
