The ushers seat people but they are mainly important because they seat the mothers before the processional starts. Some people use groomsmen to do this - so ushers arent a necessity. Ushers can be any gender and wear anything you want them to - from formal to informal.
A typical bridal party:
Maid of Honor (Matron of Honor is the same as maid of honor but married) - throws bridal shower, Barchorlette party, helps in planning, and supports the bride on her big day, carries groom ring and hands to bride during ceremony, holds bride bouquet during ceremony, and straigntens out brides train after her wakl up the isle
Bridesmaids - support the bride on her wedding day
Best Man - throws bachelor party, helps and supports groom on the wedding day, carries brides ring and hands to groom
Groomsmen - supports the groom
Flower Girls - walk before the bride and cover the isle in flowers
Ring Bearer - carries the "rings" to the groom. Most people dont put the real rings on the ring bearer pillow.. they can carry other things like a bell too
Ushers - explained above
You can use as many of these as you want or none at all. At me wedding my 10 year old daughter was my maid of honor, my 21 month old son was our ring bearer (I dont recommend using kids this young anymore:), my husbands brother was his best man, and my two sisters were ushers.
Hope this helps.

Ushers are usually the guys that you felt obligated to put in your wedding, but really didn't want as part of the immediate party. They do the grunt work, escort the old ladies down the aisle, catch the children trying to race out the church door, call the ambulance if a member of the wedding party croaks, finds the janitor if someone spews, and serve as bouncers to the wedding crashers.
Younger brothers or college drinking buddies seem to make good ushers, but you can also use the ugly girls you don't want in your wedding photos.

Ushers guide people to their seats at the church for the ceremony, muttering "friend of the bride? friend of the groom?"
Wedding party: above ushers are not part of the wedding party, they are just helpers.
Maid (unmarried) or Matron (married) of Honour - bestest closest person to the bride. Carries bouquet during ceremony. Helps fluff out train to gown.
Best Man - closest person to the groom
Bridesmaids and Groomsmen - can be either friends or family of either bride or groom
Ring Bearer and Flower Girl - only if you must (just kidding!)

Ushers (groomsmen) show the guest to their seats then stand next to the Best Man. They dance with the Brides Maids who stand next to the Maid Of Honour. The Best Man stand next to the Groom and Bride respectively. The Best man has the rings and the Maid Of Honour holds the flowers. They plan the bachelor party and wedding shower for their respective charges.

Ushers seat the guests...it's a formal courtesy. My ushers also pulled down the aisle runner, lit the candles, and escorted the grandparents/parents in the procession.

ushers seat people, think of it like a play that you would go and see at a theatre, you show your ticket to the usher and he/she will help you find your seat. So the wedding usher is similar to that. I think ushers are unnecessary

the bridesmaids are your friends, generally there to stand up for you and celebrate with you on this special day. your maid or honor, matron of honor is the most special of your friends....you can have both..........who will then be responsible for throwing you a shower..........helping you with anything that needs done prior to the wedding and on the wedding day. your best man..........similar to the maid of honor but attends to the groom and plans the bachelor's party. usher's escort your guests to their seats. simple.
have a lovely wedding!

Ushers help seat people they ask bride or groom and seat in the right spots. they make sure no one sits in the family rows and had out the programs. if you have a guest book up front for guest to sign they tell them about that too.
