I notice a lot of females in this section. Why do you own a gun? Sporting purposes, self protection, target shooting, collecting? Give us a short rundown on why you decided to be a gun owner.

For girls who answered such as:

"Why shouldn't we? What if i just like guns and collect them like any man would. Why do i have to have a certian reason? "

This question was meant to be a poll-like question. You don't have to have a reason. I think your gun ownership is admirable. I just want to know the reason if you care to share it.

For guys who answered, personally I don't care what your opinion is. The question was for the girls.

Well being a military brat, and growing up in a goose pit, my father being a waterfowl guide all of my life, shooting a firearm was second nature since I was a toddler. I mainly now as an adult own shotguns and rifles for hunting. I own a few handguns for target play and self protection. I overly encourage many women to lose their fear of shooting and have even drug several to the blind, pit, woods, or clay feild against their will.

Advise for women that do have a fear of shooting. I know you hear a lot about the recoil, and that is what worries many. Trust me, you only feel it when your sighting them in. If you have a real target, be it an animal, skeet, or self protection, you won't feel the bruising until later or after several shots.

Quite simple for all the reasons you stated and more.

Why should they not?
I for on enjoy seeing ladies in all areas of the sport.
They can shoot as well and hunt as hard and compete with any man.
My son ( an ex-Army Ranger Trainer and Expert Marksman) while in collage after his term in the army, was a Competition shooter.
In one of the intermediate competitions where there was 20 plus males, was one lone female of age 14.
My son and I were up set to see how 90% of the shooter treated her.
I stepped up and invited her to shoot beside my son, and was very verbal about dealing with anyone who had a problem with it.
My son had her set up on the far side of him so as to buffer her from the A- holes and told her not to worry, Dad will get control of them.
When her father got to the firing line from the club house, upon discovering what had went on was quite up set and very appreciative towards my son when his daughter explain what had just happened.

Well turns out that little 14 year old girl was in training for the Olympics shooting team.
She took first place and my son took second place and was 2 shot off of her score.
Third place was 9 shots down, and some of the scores I saw was just plain embarrassing bad.

My son and I were as pleased with the little girl shooting skills as her dad was.
The father daughter team did ask why Dan was using a bolt action, in a semi auto timed competition, we explained his semi auto had not made it back from the gunsmith as of yet.
The father did state he had never seen anyone work a bolt action that quick before.

That what I thank.

Why did you not give an answer, same reason.
Because I chose to.

It started out as a hobby that my husband & I could do together. Then I enjoyed it so much I started working at indoor shooting ranges. My husband became a gunsmith and taught me so I can work on them. That is a lot of fun and I am very proud of be a gunsmith and a good one at that.
I now am the Manager at a indoor shooting range and still love to shoot and teach people to shoot. I am a NRA certified instructor in rifle, shotgun and handgun.

The short answer is I love shooting.

I own a rifle to hunt for meat. Yes, I eat what I kill. I own a handgun for target practice. Plus I carry my handgun when I am out in the wilderness for protection against animals and man.

Why do men own them ? The reason for firearms ownership is varied as the people that own them. I for one offer my congrats to any lady that wishes to own and use a firearm safely. Many of my students are women and they become some of the finest shots i have had the pleasure to train.

There is a not-so-well known movie called "Extremities" and I suggest you take a look at it to see why many women carry some sort of fire arm.

PS...as a little bonus, Farrah Fawcett played in it back when she was younger!!! GRRRRRRRRRR
