Block off the part of the hall that you won't be using, otherwise, it will look that HUGE empty place no matter how much you decorate.
Youc an do this with existing dividers in the hall or by borrowing or renting potted trees, which double up as decoration.
Use white christmas lights and greenery, along with some faux pink flowers to the decorate the back of the hall.
If you have the luck of having white walls, rent (or buy) some color spot lights and project them on the walls.
A slide show of pictures projecting on the wall from a laptop would be interesting and decorative as well.

Personal story: I was a laid back bride who wanted a nice wedding but wanted to "relax" on the big day and not stress over details. I fully trusted things to be done and didn't micromanage. I thought I was an awesome bride. :D I said what I wanted, give a few tips, and didn't push the issue. This approach worked well for some things, not so much for others. :) I did not have a wedding decorator, family helped. When I arrived at the reception, things were not set up right. In fact, there were a few things set up downright wrong. Nothing was enough for people to whisper about, but there were enough things to make a bride upset. I'm not a bridezilla type (can we still use that 90s word?) by any means, but I definitely wanted my guests to have a great time and attend a great event. I won't go into details unless you ask, but trust me, although nobody died and I got over it, it was not exactly what I envisioned. My wedding still turned out really nice, but I have photos of flowerless vases for example (lol!). My advice, since you actually have a professional decorator, is to trust her work. Ask for references, draw a plan-o-gram and flowchart, and write out any and all details. Have him/her read it and sign off. Make sure they understand your vision. Then let them do it. Just be sure to check in at the beginning, middle, and end of the decorating to ensure that it is right. You don't need to stand around the whole time and micromanage or do it yourself. In fact, as long as your decorator has proven themselves to you, checking in at the end, with enough time to correct things with minor tweaks should be fine. While it's certainly "OK" to decorate yourself, you'll be so busy, tired, and stressed that for most brides, it won't be worth it. I think my solution is a happy medium. :) However, if you absolutely want to do it yourself, and will lose sleep over it if you don't, then your choice is rather obvious. Whatever works best for YOU. Good luck! P.S. Pictures of what you want is best. Either use magazine photos, drawings, or stage/set up how you would like the favours, etc.

Are you allowed to do anything to the walls? Hang things? What about an open flame? Can you get into the hall before the wedding day or do you have to set up & tear down all one night? That's rough! On my off time I'm a drum roadie. LOTS of work.
You may have to settle for slightly ugly. :)

Check with the place first. I got married at an Elk's Lodge and we werent allowed to put decorations on the wall. I used flower arrangements I rented from the florist to add some color and decorate the place.

We are renting backdrop curtains and it's $3 a foot. I'm not doing the entire hall, but behind the head table and cake table.
I'm also using tulle and making it very dim. LOL Everything will be lit by candles.

we used those icicle christmas lights as a kind of veil around the room. it hid a lot of 'sins'. we use white lights on potted trees placed around...........real or fake. and, last but not least, someone got a metal arch for a garden walkway or something and we used netting and white lites and roses on that. it was pretty. the lights in the netting work great anywhere! on tables, etc. they won't start a fire.
good luck!
