sometimes i like to watch the 'making of' for certain movies, and notice that a lot.

Pillows are inconsistent in shape and usually the boxes are replaced in post-production with rocks/other objects. Pillow shapes are not consistent and if they are erased and replaced with a new image, the image is inconsistent.

The only good reason that I can think of, being a film major and all that it the sound the box makes on the soundtrack and even the box itself could take the impact of the fall especially from a very long distance better than a mattress even could have.

Mutiple layers of boxes will slow a person down for efficenty as they "cave in." The more layers of boxes the safer it is to land on them. Same as landing on an inflatable mat. Since the boxes are empty they are free to cave in which causes the air to be pushed out/displaced. So the person hits the boxes and slowly comes to a stop.

For the noise effect, I think. If you fell on a pillow, you probably would not make as much noice.

Pillows aren't just lying there where shootouts occur...assuming we're trying to imitate real-life stuff. But then again, why are boxes always there....? Hmmm......

so their arms dont get scratched up and boxes are cheaper ...duuhhhh
