well you certainly don't try and do it by yourself! you could potentially screw it up and have a dangerous dog on your hands! the best advice I could give you would be to check in your local area for shutzhund clubs. they will test your dog to see if it has the drive and temperment to do shutzhund as well if it is healthy enough to meet all the physical demands that will be placed on the dog. if you are also looking to get into drug and bomb detection there are classes in Michigan the cost to do this is a month of your time and $12000...hope this helps

A friend recommened it to me a few years ago, and I was amazed how quickly it worked, which is why I recommend it to others. The dog training academy also has as an excellent home training course.

Police Departments buy dogs especially for that and have them trained by professionals. Schutzhund training is the closest thing you could do with your german shepherd to make him 'like' a police dog.

i've got seen Germans herd with the two showline and dealing line dogs. A dogs would not prefer a no longer hassle-free temperament for herding. yet a number of the full cumbersome roach backed tutor dogs can no longer meet the actual demands of the interest. The GSD's unique purpose became to excel at each little thing, to no longer herd sheep. certainly i think their purpose became greater for militia and police than herding (for this reason why the GSD's founder created Schutzhund as a breeding tool to purpose the suitability of the working dogs that the GSD is meant to be). Border Collies can't be while in comparison with GSDs, it incredibly is a thoroughly different style of herder. maximum herding trials are geared for the BC/Aussie/cattle dogs form of up close and private herding. no longer open selection continental type herding that GSDs, and Rottweilers are meant to do. the genuine GSD is the jack of ALL trades and the grasp of none. he isn't the quickest, or maximum effective, or smartest, or the final police dogs...yet he ranks tremendously in ALL of those aspects making him the final all around dogs for any purpose. Versatility is best right here. The tutor lines do no longer continuously produce dogs able to being Police provider dogs. the genuine GSD is the working line GSD, the different "lines" are the wannabe cousins and inlaws to the GSD.

Most police departments that house K9 units send their dogs and handlers to special classes to be trained. You can probably go online and find out more.
