If you got chatting with someone new, male or female, the topic turned to kids and they said their child had ben diagnosed with ADHD what would your first thought be? ('Yeah right! Another naughty kid/bad parent' , 'another doctor trigger happy with ADHD diagnosis' 'I know about this condition, poor you' etc etc. I'm just curious as it seems many people take ADHD very lightly when it is a serious condition that takes test after test, assessment after assessment to properly diagnose. Please answer honestly with the first thing you would think.

I don't know about anyone else .. .but this Long Term Single Parent (who is finally an Empty-Nesting Single Retiree) does KNOW (by personal experience) what it means to have Children diagnosed with this condition, and how it affects every aspect of their lives.

I understand the full medical, psychiatric, neurological and psychological follow-up care and testing. I understand the need for medications in some cases (and yes, I raised one child with Severe ADHD -- and there was no way he could function WITHOUT the medications).

So for me .. I can definitely SYMPATHIZE ... and know that they have a long and difficult journey ahead of them to raise this child of theirs to adulthood.

I would think or would ask how was the diagnosis made. My child has ADHD and its has nothing to do with being a naughty kid or bad parent. But some people think it does. The diagnosis should be done after several assessments and a visit to a neurologist. I would also think about the parent and hope they are strong because its not easy to deal with a child that has problems. It affects them for a lifetime. And as a parent no one wants to have a child with any health issue.

I honestly think people are too quick to point to ADHD when a child has a behavioral issue (especially in school).

When my brother was in school he needed a lot of one-on-one time and behaved "badly" and got discouraged and started not paying attention. My parents did everything they knew how to keep him motivated but it seemed no matter what they did, it was for nothing once he went into the classroom. The teachers wanted him medicated and my mother would not do it until tests proved he needed to be. He was finally removed from the school. That was the BEST thing that could have happened to him. He was put in a school that were patient and had smaller class sizes. It was later found that he didn't have ADHD like the teachers were so certain he did.

I know about this condition would be my answer!
Ok this is a close topic with me. My 9 year old daughter has this. It wasn't a quick diagnosis, it was about 9-12 months of testing and diffrent doctors etc. She went with out medication for about 2 years before she started taking it! It was our decision to try it not the doctors. We went to him with our concerns and really talked it out before we did it. She is currently on meds and behavioral therapy 2 times a week. I have 2 children My 9 year old with ADHD and my 5 year old that is a happy go lucky kid. I know there are alot of drug happy doctors out there and parents who just let their kids run wild and then try to blame it on something/one else. But the is a real condition that effects real families and people need to realize this!!!

"Another kid trying to make excuses for his poor behavior."

ADHD is a scapegoat "disease" a lot of the time. Save it for serious, REAL cases. I'm tired of hearing about it. "I can't do my work! I have ADHD!" Oh, shut up, no you don't, you're just lazy.
