I had this horrible problem before and also asked the same questions. Split ends happen because the hair is drier at the ends, and the dryness causes the ends to split up the shaft.
First of all do get your ends trimmed before they keep riding up. 6 to 8 weeks is good. I trim my own layered hair with salon scissors (you can purchase at Sally's, Walgreen's, CVS, otherwise go to the salon for trim). Next, make sure you use a heat protectant when applying heat to your hair. Ends tend to split more in the winter than summer, because of the dryness so keep your ends conditioned. Also, use the heat as less as possible. If you use a curling iron, try heat rollers because they are less damaging to your ends. If you use a blowdryer invest in a hooded blow dryer because it is also less damaging to your hair. Excessive heat creates more dryness and that increases split ends. Most importantly, vigorous combing or brushing increase split ends so try to brush as less as possible to avoid that fuzzy ended look (split ends).
Suggested products: L'ANZA Daily Elements Leave In Conditioner. It has keratin which makes it easier for the hair to penetrate (or any good leave in conditioner) . Heat protectant (like Aveda' Brilliant Damage Control or Motions Heat Protector). Hair steamer and DEEP conditioner once a week because it locks in the moisture and becomes even more effective with the deep conditioner. Good luck!!

Right NOW to remedy the problem you are going to have to get them cut. If you ignore it and you have ALOT of them the split will just go up the hair shaft and cause alot of breakage. Think of a crack in the windshield. If you allow it to stay there its gonna get bigger and the window shield will eventually break.
Once you give your hair new life with a trim. Take good care of it. Buy good quality shampoos/conditioners for your hair type (it doesn't have to be expensive). Use heat sparingly if you do use heat use a heat protective serum to minimize damage. Take very good care of your ends. The longer yoru hair the more crucial it is to take care of the ends b/c your ends are the oldest part of your hair and have been through the most.

You need to have the split ends cut off. That's the only way to solve the problem. Products that claim to repair them only do so temporarily. You might hate hearing it, but it's the best thing to do. If you leave hair split then it will continue to split up the shaft and more hair will need to be cut off to remove the split ends. You want to grow your hair out, but you don't want it to be a damaged mess do you? You should start on a clean slate with freshly trimmed, split-end free hair before you grow it out.

Using deep condtioners at least once a week. I use from a salon Alterna Enzymetherapy products with Hemp. I LOVE this line, and i've used many due to my sister in law working at a salon.
They have shampoo, conditioner, split ends reconstructer(comes in yellow tube) straightening balm, spray and shine. I have them all!
Or if you can't find that one, go to a salon and they usually have the stuff they use for sale there. It's worth the extra $$$ go get quality.

Trim your hair. Don't brush it when it is wet. and use a hot oil treatment once a week and a leave in conditioner on the ends daily. Stop styling it they way you are or your hair will never get repaired.

get your hair trimmed around once a month.
if you use a heat tool like a straightening iron or blow dryer-
use a protecting oil or serum on your ends.
like Garnier Fructis Straightening Oil
comes in a round squirt bottle, and you just deposit into hands and then apply to your ends and ONLY your ends. if you put too far up, your hair will become greasy.
hope this helps

You need to reduce the amount of heat you use on your hair. Invest in a Hair Mayonaisse...excellent for deep conditioning and repairing damaged hair. Trim your ends every 6 wks, roller set(dip tip of finger in setting lotion cork and apply on ends) and wrap (with silk/satin scarf) your hair at nights

never ever use a hot oil treatment, they're bad for your hair...I do suggest getting a little trim, just a tiny bit to make it healthy again...and I do believe there is a product called split endz so i would assume it is for that specific problem.
Good Luck!

You just need a trim... you won't even notice a change in length. This will just make your hair look healthier and you won't have any more split ends. =)
