One theory is that both sides of your brain record what your eyes see or whatever you experience, but one side is slightly slower than the other side.
Therefore, when the faster side of the brain processes the information you have perceived the event as having occurred.
Then, when your slower side processes that same information, since it was already processed by the other side a split second earlier, you then perceive this as if it were a memory of a past event.

That you see something that you have seen before... you've been there, done that...but you only see a few seconds that are really familiar. Some say the theory is that your soul does trips and just visits these places before they actually happen, your souls knows everything that will happen to you, but you can't see that normally.
Not quite a scientific answer, right? I wonder how many souls "on holiday" are wandering around the world then. :)

It's like an electrical short in you brain. Probably due to some path of least resistance present. Since it's your brain, you are the only one experiencing it, and it seems real just like any supernatural experience, it's only real to you.
