I have an old birdcage that needs to be redone. It has rust on it, and needs to be repainted. Is there a safe spraypaint I can use on it?I have cockatiels.

They are going to scrape and ingest whatever paint you use. You should buy a stainless steel or iron cage and just wax it. No paint is better than any paint. Rust treatments can be worse than paints.

You might want to sandblast the cage and wax it with a natural wax such as beeswax from a candle or crafts store- do not use car wax or floor wax.

If you must use paint, make very sure that it is FREE of LEAD and ZINC! or you will start to notice brain damage and immune problems in your birds.

If you can find a pet-safe paint, be cautious. A better cage is preferable to a bunch of wasted time and money and two dead or sick birds.

No, I would not repaint any cage intended to house birds that chew/climb on the wires (like cockatiels). You have no idea what is in the paint and paint is a leading cause of heavy metal poisoning in birds which can be fatal. Don't risk your birds' lives. It will be cheaper in the long run to buy a new cage. I have seen nice cages that would be appropriate for your birds for $50 or less. You could end up spending hundreds in vet bills to save them from poisoning from the paint. It is not worth the risk.

I would ask at a pet shop or even the vet. I am sure there is some kind of non-toxic paint that you could use that won't harm your birds. But find out for sure first. My ex-husband and I had birds too. I bought my ex a (mitred conure) for his birthday one year, with the rod iron cage and the whole sha-bang. It came with the water and food dish which were made out of ceramic that set right into a holder, it was all so nice except when the bird bit off a piece of the ceramic from the dish and swallowed it. There was blood all over the cage, and blood coming out of his nose and beak. He was bleeding to death inside from the ceramic getting into his lungs. It was a very, very sad situation and the vet could not do anything for him except ease his pain, and put him to rest. So if you or anyone else has ceramic dishes for your birds to eat or drink out of please get rid of them, they are deadly! "TWEET-TWEET"!

If the cage is worth it, take it to have it powder coated. Other than that, do not paint.

Here's a link you might find useful. It says use child-safe paint :
