Personally-- Completely against it. It's an animal bound to be extinct, why not save the most possible. If the baby was in perfect condition, there is nothing wrong with humans raising it. I can't even believe that putting him to sleep was an option. I'm not very fond of kids but I'm not trying to be cold but... Would they think of putting a human child to sleep b/c it was abandoned--NO! So why do it to a defenseless polar bear? They live alone most of their life anyways, so i'm sure it cannot be that bad. Due to these events, he may even get more attention from the people and get them more interactive in saving the wild life...

The polar bears in Berlin Zoo may be having trouble getting to sleep as unseasonably warm weather interferes with their hibernation schedule, but one little bear is just happy to be alive.
Knut was born on Dec. 5, 2006, the first polar bear cub to be born in Berlin Zoo in 30 years, but was rejected by his mother, the 20-year-old polar bear Tosca. His twin brother died four days after the birth.
Little Knut spent the first 44 days of his life in an incubator. Thanks to the loving care of the zoo staff, he prospered and now has "a good chance of survival," according to his keeper Thomas Dörflein. The dedicated Dörflein has slept in the zoo since the birth of the bear in order to provide round-the-clock care to the cub, and feeds Knut milk six times a day with a bottle.
Knut weighed only 810 grams (1.8 pounds) when he was born but now tips the scales at 3.9 kilograms (8.6 pounds). He still has a long way to go though -- adult male polar bears can weigh up to 800 kilograms.
i say let him live the poor polar bear did not asks to be born in the world just for gos sakes let the polar bear grow up

The zoopkeepers are doing the right thing because polar bears are endangered and we need breeding programs to keep them from becoming extinct. If the animal activists had their way like this then pandas would now be extinct.
These activists are idiots when it comes to this situation they need to leave it to the zookeepers & vets who know more about animals and how to care for them.
I also find it very ironic that the vegetarian activists want to kill an innocent polar bear cub while the meat-eaters are trying to save him. I thought it was their job to PROTECT the animals.

On one hand I understand that it is usually best to let nature take it's course, so I'm not upset with the activist. I think they are wrong in Knut's case though. Polar bears are solitary animals, and they are endangered. The zoo keepers were right to save him I believe. Long live Knut!!

The story is unfamiliar to me, but why would anyone want to euthanize an abandoned polar bear anyway? Maybe a surrogate mother could adopt Knut?

Thank you for asking this!
The only animals that should be in zoos are animals like this that cannot survive on their own, like birds that have wing injuries or confiscated cougars that people have kept as pets illegally.
It's disgusting to put this animal to sleep. It can live in a zoo. But I do agree that the keepers must not feed it by hand. Someone will get killed doing that when the polar bear gets bigger.
I hope people write in to this zoo. Maybe PETA can help.

for those who don't know abotu knut... here is one of many articles out there.
http://www.cnn.com/2007/WORLD/europe/03/20/story.polar/index.html
I think they are doing the right thing trying to keep him alive. Honestly don't think they should kill it. Why doesn't the person suggest we kill all the unwanted children of the world for the same reason!? Just a stupid notion if you change the context now isn't it?

Not really an activist if he wants to put an innocent animal to sleep. He just wants his 10 minutes of fame. He can go and suck it.
