I'm interested in the adoption of Russian / Ukranian children. How was the process? Did the social services in the UK give you a hard time or was the process OK? A future thought for ourselves. I think it is difficult to get babies / children in the UK.

To everyone who gave a sensible answer, thank you for the information. It's nice to know there's people who have done the same and who show support.

We've been looking into it. There are some websites on international adoption. A number of countries have residency requirements. For instance, to adopt in columbia, you need to spend some 6 to 12 weeks in the country. Columbia being a relatively dangerous country, I wonder if I would come back. Plus, I simply am in no position to spend months in another country.
China recently clamped down on adoptions with lots of restrictions, from health to prior marriage state (I've been divorced, so that leaves me out).
Look up "international adoption" - there's one site, I can't get to it right this second - that lists the pros and cons of each individual country.
Good luck!

I had a friend who was looking at adopting a baby from a Russian orphanage but apparently lots of the babies there have fetal alcohol syndrome, and it's a very common problem. So in the end she gave up on the idea of a baby adopted a 9 year old boy from a UK disadvantaged home.
I think that adopting babies is difficult because not many babies are put up for adoption. Whereas a generation ago, young girls got pregnant and put their babies up for adoption, now there is very little stigma attached with keeping them.
Older children are more common because unfortunately there are lots of people out there who have children and don't treat them right and social services take them away.

I don't know anything about adopting from Russia or Ukraine however I and all four of my siblings are adopted from Asian countries and I just wanted to point out that, although I love my family very much! If you can get a baby (6 months or younger) rather than an older child (5-10 yrs) it's a lot better. Do a web search for "attachment disorder" and then you will know what I mean.

There are plenty of Babies put up for adoption the thing is that most couples want babies so they are the first too go. A friends Aunt and Uncle adopted a girl from Russia at the time she was 18months old, this was about 6 or 7 years ago
