This is a very simple question to answer. - - - -
Yes, they will teach you how to swim.
And Yes, it is BEST to know how to swim before you get to boot camp. They do not have patients when it comes to understanding how someone who does not know how to swim wants to join the Navy.

No you don't have to know they will teach you how to swim but the draw back is you will be set back in training until you can swim.

Better learn now makes boot camp a whole lot shorter.

I think it best if you already know how to swim before you join the navy. They have a tough love method of teaching. You know, the push you in to let you sink or swim, then they shout instructions from the side of the pool. You better be listening !

when i joined, everyone jumped into the water whether you could swim or not, then you had to tread water for 5 minutes, then swim 50 yards. if you can't swim, you will jump and then they will get you out and then you will be held back until you learn. everyone in the navy is at least a basic swimmer.

They can teach you, but it might make your stay in bootcamp longer because it's part of testing to get to the next week. So learn prior to joining, because you don't want to be the one that gets held back for something you could have taken care of. Have your recruiter teach you - they're in your hands right now, so push your date to go out and tell them you want them to teach you how to swim - they're supposed to make sure you're ready to go, so do it.

They do test you in boot camp, so say it up front to recruiter, and company commander. Don't recall if have to know how to swim. Sorry.

Do you really want to wait until bootcamp to learn to swim???? It is tough enough without adding stress to it. Besides you could be recycled or booted out if you dont pass.

No. You don't have to know how. They do teach folks who want to know. And, oddly enough, passing the swimmer's exam isn't mandatory. They figure you will fight a fire more passionately, if you can't swim.
