my cat, almost a year old, has like this black flakey stuff in his ears. he itches his..right? ear a lot. and i just thought that the black stuff was ear wax..i know im stupid.
anyway, someone i know said that the black stuff is like a by-product of ear mites. not sure.
and today as he was scratching his ear (you know. with his foot/claws) it started to bleed a little. but i'm pretty sure it's just b/c he scratches it too much.
so first. what should i do to make him stop itching his ears?
second. is it really like a by-product/symptom of ear mites?
anddd. what should i do before i take him to the vet?

It's earmite, have it diagnosed by the vet and get some eardrops for mite and perhaps antibiotics if there is an infection in the ear canal. Use a spot on like revolution or advocate, this prevents earmites as well as fleas, you have to use it regularly and it is highly contagious so you will need to treat any other cats or dogs you have too.
You will still have to see the vet as they will probably need to be cleaned out and this can't be done safely at home.

They are ear mites, and you can get stuff at a pet store or even most grocery stores for them, they are ear drops when you put them in, you have to rub the lower part of their ears to keep it in there. They'll run around shaking their head and itching like crazy but it'll help. I also use a cue-tip to help get some of it out, but be careful with it, because you don't want to damage their ear.

It could be either ear mites or a bacterial infection. The vet can do a simple test to see which one, and give you the right treament for it. If you have any other cats I would treat them too.

I'm fairly sure that's ear mites. Take your cat to the vet.

He defiantly has ear mites and it sounds severe.I always clean my cats ears out with q-tips and peroxide. It keeps them clean and free from ear mites. But take him to vet as it sounds like they should be looked at.

It sounds like ear mites to me. You should take him to to the vet and they will give him ear drops and medicine that can take care of the problem.
Also, you ARE NOT stupid! ("stuff was ear wax..i know im stupid")

It's absolutely earmites, Hon.
You can make him a bit more comfortable by swabbing out his ears with a Q-Tip with some baby oil on it. Your vet will thoroughly clean his ears before he administers the miticide.
And please get the miticide from your vet, rather than an over-the-counter product from a pet store....it just isn't as effective. Kitty will feel better immediately after the first application.
PS....you canNOT get them from your cat :)

it sounds like ear mites and you need to take him to the vet asap. so they can give you the correct antiboitics. cause the longer you wait and try and home treatment it has the higher potentional of getting inffected and he can lose his hearing over it. its just better spend the money and take him to the vet.
