My step-daughter is coming up for a visit next month and we will be celebrating her 4th birthday while she is here. I want to make as much stuff as I can b/c I want it to be really personal and creative and I want her to be able to help me make some of the things (I'm not going to let her know they're for her birthday party, though). I saw an idea for a birthday cake in a parenting magazine that I thought was really cute: choose whichever flavor cake mix you (or the child) like, bake it in a 13x9 in. pan, spread white icing over it, use Fruit Roll-Up strips to decorate it like ribbon wrapping on a present, and then place Sprees all over it to give it a polka-dot wrapping paper look
(I put this in here incase anyone else could use that idea)
Does anyone else have anymore cute cake ideas that are fairly easy but will be "cool-looking" to a toddler?? Thanks in advance!!

You could do a barbie-doll cake. You use the cake as the base, stick a clean, naked barbie doll in up to the waste, and then use icing to cover and decorate the cake and create the top portion of the dress.

Here's the link to a site with more detailed instructions:

My mom makes cakes so we've had some great ones for my kids! An easy one that you will find on a lot of websites that's cool is a teapot one. We did that for my daughter's 4th and then had koolaid in little teacups. Then we did dainty sandwiches and themed it around the cake. You just use oven safe bowls for the batter and put together for the pot, ice it, then use marzipan (almond paste, a can found in the baking section usually by the fillings, rolled with powdered sugar) for the handle and top. But like I said, if you put teapot cake recipes in your search engine you will get a million different sites to print a recipe from.

Toddlers also really (really) like cakes with toys on them. At 4, she's likely into Dora the Explorer, and a couple of small plastic toys on a simply frosted cake will appeal to her.

Frost the cake in one of Dora's signature colors (orange or purple) and you are sure to be a star. If you let the child add sprinkles (colored sugar is a big hit) she can 'decorate' without worry of 'messing it up'. Basically, at 4, the more the better!

This works for any child, really, choose something they like (trucks, dolls, dinosaurs) and add a few to the top. You won't need to do much fancy frosting, let the toys 'be' the decoration.

Caution, if other pre-schoolers are at the party, expect that they will also desire a toy, so plan ahead.

A good idea is a butterfly. It's a simple shape to cut out of a square cake, then ice with pastel frosting. You can use different colours and make segmants - outline them in smarties. Use pipe cleaners for antennae (BUT make sure they are removed before serving cake)

cook a simple cake in a ring pan (like a bundt or angel food tin). Ice with brown icing to make it look like a nest - you could ice it with a narrow tipped piping bag and/or use coconut. Then make some cupcakes and ice them to look like little birds with their beaks open waiting for food. it's cute for easter. or you could do a catapillar..ice it any colour you want and then used shoestring licorice cut into three or four inch lengths and stick them out of it like hairs, and other candies to make a face on it etc.
