According to the TSA web site you are allowed to bring Knitting and Crochet Needles in your checked and carry on luggage. I personally would just check them to make sure there is no problems. The rules do change often.

Here's the link to the TSA website that spells out what is and is not allowed. I couldn't find "knitting needles" but did see that tools less than 7" (including screwdrivers) ARE allowed as carry-on -- seems close enough to work for me! I flew United in January and saw several people knitting during the flight.
