Hmmm... See I would have to say No... If you can't afford a good quality dog, then you can't afford good quality food, you can't afford to pay the vet, and everything else that comes along with a dog...

You should do more research into what you are looking for, what constitutes a good quality dog, and forget about trying to get a free dog. You get what you pay for.

Check out the shelter, and see if they find you an acceptable candidate for adoption. You won't find a good quality purebred for free or next to nothing.

Well...I have a 1 year 4 month old dog, and last month I adopted a 12 week old puppy. Potty training was horrid....I still come home daily to a destroyed laundry room. But he's great...! My older dog has showed him the ropes quite well, and he's adapting fine. Retired Greyhounds are still going to be super active, although they are trained. I would personally go with the puppy, but you are right about the temperment. My older dog is GREAT, and my puppy is on his way to being great, nothing beats watching a puppy try to keep up, or sleep and have dreams etc, plus it'll be young enough that you can train him especially for you. On that note, older dogs are potty/cage trained and that is a definite plus. I would factor in your time and really think about if you have the time and patience for pretty much a baby. When you find the right dog, you'll just know!

If in USA look for them on a notice boards, in the market or at library or any other place.

Call city hall in your town or city(Delhi) they will give you a dog for free, may have to pay vet fees(or a nominal set fee) for a shots or two and licence fee.

You may be asked to donate some money, most such places are call City Pound/shelter (from impounding the stray/lost/neglected animals). Or in Gujarati language they are call pan-ja-ra-por.

You will save a dog from death, most are put to death if the owners do not show up within few days usually 3 days(driving force is money and the room to keep them.

Make sure you can afford the dog they are expensive to keep and they need constant care and attention. Going on vacation and things like that is also very difficult (any Pats just not the dogs).
