Many of the other answerer's above me run the whole range from Yes they do to no they dont.

Here it is from My time in the Navy in the early to mid 90's

In bootcamp you only have one morning at an indoor firing range. mosty of the time is taken up in safty lectures then you fire a full clip from a .45 rechambered to fire .22 rounds. If you hit the target with the majority of your rounds at 50 feet you qual. That is the SUM TOTAL of weapons training your get for the standard Navy Sailor.
The only other weapon you will see in Boot is not really a weapon but a "Piece". thats an old Rifle (an M-1 if I remember) that has had its working pieces removed so as to be inoperable as a rifle. This Piece is used for marching drills and such.

When you get to the fleet, you may recieve some further training on an M14, M16, or a Shotgun if you happen to be assigned duties on the SAT & BAF. Thats the Security Alert Team & Backup Alert Force. You may also get duties to man up a .50 cal Machine gun during certain evolutions or drills.

Some ratings may have further training due to their job discriptions. Gunner's Mate (GM) comes to mind. So does MA ( Master at Arms).

Obviously if You become a SEAL you will have a lot of weapons training.

But for the Average everyday sailor, that one clip of .22's fired from an old .45 one morning long ago in boot is the only weapon he will every hold or fire.

as a side note: The Navy has/had the largest rifles in the world. The main guns of warships such as the Great Battleships of WW 2 are Rifled guns and are correctly called Naval Rifles.

If you think a 10mm Glock or a .45 or .50 is Big, Just ask any old salt GM(G) about the 16" 406mm Rifle

Yes the Navy Trains with Rifles. Mostly the M-16. but also the M-14. Of course it depends on your rating and what unit you are assigned to as the weapons change with the need of the unit. As a member of the Navy reserve I qualify on the M-16 and Shotgun 2x a year

not during bootcamp unless they have changed it since i joined 17 years ago. once on ship you will get some basic training with rifles and more with the pistol. now navy ground forces and others get plenty of firearms training. i even got to attend black water securities training, if you get a chance go there its awesome!

Yes in certain situations for certain ratings. On my ship's Sat/Baf team we trained with m14's m16's, m60's, 50cal, 12ga, 45's and before a deployment to the Persian Gulf during the Iraq/Iran war we had training at Dam Neck Va. with grenade launchers, flashbang/percussion grenades and mortars. Never fired a shot and never shot at!
