I'm looking at buying a ford escape with 164,000 miles one it. I was wondering if anyone knows how long these things run or what I should be looking out for. The car has been owned by one person who was a salesman so they are mostly highway miles. But I am still a bit skeptical.

That mileage is kinda high even if its' highway miles, you might have some bigger problems later on, i'd get one with much lower mileage.

Just like any machine it depends on how it was maintained. We have Ford escapes that do between 70-80,000 miles a year. Usually after 150,000 miles or so we rebuild part of the motor. With out knowing the history of the car and how it was maintained its hard to advise. I do not know where you are located but a escape with 164K is not worth much money. If you can run a car fax on it and could but it for under 3 grand its a decent deal. You don't say if its a 6 cyc or if its a 4x4. You can look up the value including the options on www.kbb.com. by entering your zip code it will tell you what you should pay for this car in your area. You can also check ebay motors and look at say a 100 mile radius of where you are to check similar vehicles. We just sold a 2002 6 cyc 4x4 with 240K at auction for 1800 to give you some idea.

Take it for a test drive and push it off a cliff and go back to the salesman and tell him you did him a favor. It will be a win win situation
