Good point. The vast majority of us atheists came from a religious background, mostly Christian on this forum. (I haven't met very many atheists who used to be Muslim) Xians are often surprised that we can argue with bible quotes just as easily as they can.
I was a "born again, evangelical, fundamentalist believer" at one point in my life.
I am now a hardcore atheist.
No, I'm not angry at God,(any more than I'm angry at Lord Voldemort for trying to kill Harry Potter)
I'm not "bargaining" or taking a chance that I can live a "sinful" life then repent at the last minute, or any of the other bizarre things I have been accused of.
I was absolutely a believer and a true Christian at the time. I accepted Jesus Christ as my personal saviour and believed he died on the cross to save me from my sins. I believed he died on the cross and arose from the dead and ascended into heaven to sit at Gods' right hand. I believed in the Trinity. I believed in the literal truth of the bible. So do NOT tell me I was "never really a believer" in the first place. That is one of the bigger lies Christians persist in telling.....several people already have used that as their "answer" already.
I'm sure most Christians believed in Santa Claus when they were children. Why not now? Is there some sort of change that makes you not understand Santa??
So when a Christian tells me I "just don't understand" or I "need to read the Bible more" they are wasting their time. I do understand Christianity, and I have read the Bible.
I just have chosen to reject it in the face of overwhelming evidence that it is a farce and a myth.

I think they were fed a diet of shallow Christianity and they simply couldn't take it. Our spiritual nature is a delicate one (as in the baby Christchild) that is powerful if it is "centered" that can attract wrath and be despised because it can be percieved by others as weak--or dangerous.
As it was then, it is even now within me. Some of the demons are right within us. How can you "win" by being a servant. Well. Look around the world at the personality types; I'll take a few...Stalin. Pol Pot. ...or Mahatma Ghandi, Mother Theresa, Einstein---Schindler.
There are powerful forces in this world, and the abuse of power can and does occur within the social structure of a human-organized entity, whether corporation, church, political party, club, football team. The people power of these entities that push for conformity can kill and maim the spirit of the individual. So they toss in the towel, because they remember how mean a nun was, how condemning a congregation was, how self-serving a pastor was. They missed the point of God, because it was served up in a heartless fashion--Cinderella had a mother and sisters that despised her. Those "look like" family, but the fairy tale has the wherewithall to call them STEP-mother and STEP-sisters. Those are the fake relationships that were not serving anything except their own fears. Who would walk back into that kind of an environment? Nobody human would. Who is hungry for light, truth, love? They would walk back into a relationship wearing those powerful transcendant characteristics. Looking within to realize this is one thing. Acting it out in this world is a little bit tougher.
Ex-Christians were no doubt fed a diet of "social control" (as described in source 1 below). That's ain't Jesus, that is NOT creative nor loving--that is human (or herd) nature! The other two links offer some encouragement, as they point out truths about human spirit.
Christ, God, and the Holy Spirit is a profoundly creative dynamic, and it is not OF this world. It is love, as described in
Song of Solomon 8:7

There is no such thing as an ex-Christian. You are
A.) living as a christian who hasn't accepted Jesus Christ as savior and therefore not a Christian, or
B.) a Christian who has accepted Jesus as savior but choose not to understand Christianity because of outside influences.
I strongly recommend a Sunday school classses and bible study groups to help with understanding.

According to the Bible, they are given over to a strong dillusion. They want the desires of their flesh, so that's what they get. There is alot written about them being blind, not being able to hear, a veil over their eyes, so taht if they readthe word, they dont understand it. The word is for believers, it is powerful, but the "blind" and "dead" cannot comprehend it. Jesus isthe light in the darkness, the truth that conquers all lies and the way to God.

In Isaiah 59:1-3 we read; Behold, the LORD's hand is not shortened, that it cannot save; neither his ear heavy, that it cannot hear: But “your” iniquities have separated between you and your God, and “your” sins have hid his face from “you” that he will not hear.
For your hands are defiled with blood, and your fingers with iniquity; your lips have spoken lies, your tongue hath muttered perverseness.
Here, we can see, "deep rooted sin" produces a "separation" between God and humanity, and "hides" his face from us!
It is of utmost important to note, that "God" does not "himself" hide his face, it's "sin" that hides his face!
Other words; Sin" sets up a sinful barrier between God and Humanity, and, as is seen in the life of Israel throughout the Old Testament, allows the unrestricted manifestation of Satan and his evil doings.
Dont be fooled! Salvation is not something you can have one day and lose it the next. If you got something, you had one day, and lost it the next. You never got it to start with!

"He who has it shall be taken away and given to another."
BUT,
"He is married to the backslider."
AND
"Though a righteous man fall seven times, yet he stands again, but the wicked falls into calamity."
AND
"Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life...."
This means Jesus is still interested in your salvation no matter how far you go away like the Prodical's Son.
God bless.

2 things could result in an ex-Christian; the most common being many never really knew Christ in the first place. The second and far more frightening are those who succumb to temptation and refuse to look back towards the light.

The issue is that you can't see things as they want you to see it anymore, so you're not "understanding" it any longer... reminds me of a keychain I once saw about trying to see things from another's pov...
