I know someone who didn't have one when they were young but seems to have developed a mild one.

If it is possible, what would be the cause?

I would say it's possible. We pick up accents and drop them if we are exposed to different ones throughout our lives, therefore this individual may have picked it up from listening to someone elses lisp and uncounciously adopted it...to a certain extent.
Often people who have lisps though do so due to either positioning of the teeth or incorrect tongue movements when talking so if your friend is finding this annoying or worrying perhaps seeing a dentist first of all to check their teeth are ok and if that is not the problem a speech therapist should be able to help, especially as this person was not born with a lisp, they should be able to be trained back out if it.

hope that helps.
