I live in NYC and I can't think of any good downtown coffee shops .. are there any that I'm just not aware of? Looking for somewhere to take a first date. Please help if you know any? thanks.

There are two nice places to get tea and coffee on St. Marks Place close to Tompkins Square Park. They're quiet and have really great atmospheres. They'd be nicer with warm weather because the park is right there.

Max Brenner has two stores downtown, one near Union Square and one closer to 2nd ave and 9th street. The. Best. Hot. Chocolate. Ever. They say chocolate is an aphrodisiac.

You can hit a few nice ones walking south from Washington Square park on Thompson.

Try newyork.citysearch.com to find places in a more specific area, or for itemized results. Check for results in Soho or the West Village -- those areas are chock full of clean places with nice atmospheres.

Just check out Zagats, they list coffee shops as well as good restaurants. But I'm sure there are coffe shops on just about every corner downtown. I'm not sure how far downtown you want to go. It's not a coffee shop, but you might want to try Pastis in the Meatmarket, across from the Gansvort hotel, it's a lovely place.
