Yes, hair products always accumulate on hair. The best way to get rid of buildup is to use a clarifying shampoo, like Neutrogena Clean or a daily shampoo that is fortifying like Garnier Fructis. Depending on how many stylers you use, you have to determine when to use a deep-cleaning shampoo. Too often, and it might dry out your hair. I use Neutrogena Clean once a month, and I use two pretty lightweight stylers every day.

Natural Shampoos & Conditioners: Try the natural food or product stores. These products will not build up on your scalp and "suffocate" the follicles. I use the product Equalizing Shampoo by Hair Solutions (Step 1), 12 oz. (*NOTE) The Conditioner is under the name of Bio Harmonix Lite Rinse Conditioner with Sun Screen (Step 3), 10.6 oz. through LH Technologies, Boca Raton, Fl 33431, phone 888-446-3747. Then, (Step 2) is the Hair and Scalp Live Enzyme Cleanser, 11 oz. (*NOTE) The enzyme product will help to strip the old buildup off of the scalp and hair. I originally used these products exclusively, but came across the product below that I use WITH the above mentioned Step1,2,3 products. See explanation below.
(*NOTE) The company I used was closed down or went out of business per BBB on May 2, 2006. The products they sold are still available, though, thru the original distributor. I was told that the products can be ordered via phone 1-888-446-3747 or the website:

I hope you find my suggestions helpful!

Yes, you can get product build-up on your hair from styling products.
Neutrogena Anti-Residue Shampoo is the best clarifying shampoo I've found. Use it at least every 2 weeks. More often if you use a lot of styling products.

If you use salon quality products, then no, this won't happen. If you have a build up already, you should invest in a good cleansing shampoo. I like Wayne Grund, Cleanse...works great..talk to your stylist about what would be good for your hair...
