Is it safe to get a tattoo in a foreign country while on vacation, such as Mexico?

lots of people do it but... i wouldn't. my skin and health are too important to potentially ruin it for a tattoo. so many other things are lax in mexico who knows how well their sanitation rules are enforced... if at all. any place that has a well known slogan "don't drink the water" doesn't make me feel great about having my body worked on in any way.

It can be safe. Check the shop out before getting tattooed there though . Sterilization is very importent so you need to ask yourself the following questions and ask the following questions.
Is the shop clean? Do all the instruments come from sterile containers, sealed bags, autoclave tubing? Are the supplies kept in clean holding containers? Are there inky fingerprints in the tattooing area? Do they autoclave? You have to educate yourself before you get into the tattoo chair. Ask to see current certification stating that they have their autoclave checked monthly or at least quarterly by a lab. Make sure they don't reuse ink. Most studios are single-use needle method mainly because people feel more comfortable when they hear that. We never re-use needles.
Gloves must always be used. A hospital grade disinfectant should be used on all surfaces between each client. If anything falls on the floor its toast. Your tattooist must not smoke while working on you due to touching of the face. The cigarette touching the fingers then back to your bloody skin can contaminate you, as will as you contaminating the tattooist. You can never take safety for granted! If you ask the artist, or the other people that work there who should know about these safety procedures, and they are unsure of the answers, RUN!

NOOOO!!!!!

No I would definitely not recommend this. I went to Cancun Mexico. One day we went to shop at the local flea market, where every 5th booth was a "tattoo parlor".
I was thinking about getting a tattoo, but wanted to check out their conditions before deciding. The shops are little booths in the middle of the market, with a towel/blanket for a privacy door. The shops are dirty, but that wasn't my concern... I was more worried about the needles. I asked the guy about the needles and he showed my what he said was a new needle. It was loose in a ZipLoc baggie. I said that's not new. He said "yes it is. I boiled it in water after the last person used it."
They don't have the same health standards that shops in the USA and Canada have to abide by. They get drunk tourists to believe they are getting a tattoo with a new needle, when really it's not. Trust me. I saw 4 people get tattooes, same needle. Talk about a good way to get Hep C or worse.

We looked at 5 different tattoo shops, and all were the same. And this was smack dab in the middle of the expensive touristy section of Mexico, so if the tattoo shops are that bad there, I wouldn't get one any where.

Also saw quite a few badly infected tats.

I would wait until you got home! You don't know what kind of health regulations, if any, that country has. And if something goes wrong, how are you supposed to get back there to see them? If it is a vacation, then you won't have to wait that long to get home and get your tat. Besides, would you really want to get a tattoo done in Mexico, then not be able to go in the pool or the ocean? That would ruin my trip for sure!

I wouldnt advise you getting tattoos abroad because many of them don't use any kind of aseptic standards and many of them don't sterilize their equipment so get a tattoo at home because in the states they have laws mandating tattoo shops to change their needles and fresh ink for every client. The risk of contracting hepatitis and HIV are higher in salons abroad than in the states since laws were passed to protect the general population health.

if you plan on going to Korea for some awful reason, i recommend NOT getting a tattoo. I lived there for 2 years, Military, and i have seen some of the tattoo places and they are nasty and dirty and not sterile at all.

If I were you I'd stay away from 3rd world tattoo parlours as there is a massive temptation to reuse needles and so on.

I judge a place on whether or not they have a website. This means they are serious about their business and are probably equally serious about cleanliness. Although I've seen clean places without a website, so the method isn't foolproof.
