based on how well the answer pertains to the question, or if the answer coincides with our own opinion. many times i have found that the answer is great, even though it's different than my beliefs.
example - when people ask what the devil is and the answer is something like: In part, the devil and his temptations are a test for us to see how well we obey God.
well i think this is a good biblical answer, from the point of a christian, but, i don't agree with it since i am pagan and don't believe in the devil.
my answer might be: to scare people into religion.
so, how are we supposed to answer?

edit of my last sentence - not how are we supposed to answer, but on what basis are we supposed to give a thumbs up or down?

It appears you are on the right track in awarding thumbs-up or thumbs-down. The quality of the response should decide the merits of approval or disapproval. Usually, when someone automatically throws in a deriding comment about my faith, which is LDS, I feel compelled to award their response negatively.
Nevertheless, there are good replies that do not agree with me.

I don't typically give a thumbs down unless the answer has absolutely nothing to do with the question.
I have given best answer to people who believe in something that I find appalling.
I think it really goes to the person that giving the thumbs down or whatever. They just aren't open minded enough to realize that everyone is entitled to their own beliefs, even if they are different.
If someone doesn't like my answer, well then too bad, they should have asked the question then. That's my opinion anyway.
I give thumbs up or down bases on the quality of the answer. I've given fundies thumbs up if their answer was well thought out and stated (according to their beliefs) given the question. I've given Atheists thumbs down because their answers have been rude, insulting, and just plain ignorant and had nothing to do with the question.

If the answer is relevant, articulate and shows that the answerer has put some thought into the post, then I will give it a thumbs-up... even if I don't happen to agree with the beliefs of the answerer.
If it's relevant, but not particularly informative, I do neither.
If it's irrelevant, or what I deem to be moronic, then thumbs-down it is.

I supply thumbs up, if I agree or discover an answer humorous. I under no circumstances supply thumbs down for a fact it fairly is opinion based. I in basic terms supply thumbs down for responses that are fake to questions that require data.

I hit the wrong thumb on accident a lot.......
Just kidding!
I give a thumb up if they answered the question. I don't have to necessarily agree with the answer. Also thumbs up if they are funny. I don't agree with all of the funny answers but some are hilarious!

I usually only give thumbs down if the answerer is being obscene or hateful. Seeing other peoples opinions is kinda the point of being here I think so I don't give thumbs down just because I don't agree.

I give thumbs-up for reasons others have stated here. I give thumbs-down for people who don't read questions and respond with kneejerk opinions showing that they haven't read the question:
Q: Why do Christians do x, y, z?
A: Because they are stupid sheeple. lolz xians are stupid. <- thumbs-down.
Q: Why do atheists disbelieve in a, b, c?
A: Because they are stupid and incapable of understanding the Bible. Praise Jesus. <- thumbs-down.
Anything that shows critical thinking and genuine interest in the question as well as, on social-religion questions, an understanding of others' beliefs and willingness to at least address them (though not agree with them) is worthy of a thumbs-up.

I don't think it really matters...If its a good point...regardless of my belief I give it a thumbs up. The only time that I give thumbs down is for insulting, degrading, bashing, or flat ignorant answers.
