I het financial aid to attend college at edinboro university. I was told by a multitude of friends that there is a way to get your financial aid to pay for an apartment instead of a dorm. I was just wondering if any body knows how this works?

If you get financial aid that's above the tuition (what used to go toward room and board), you can get a refund of that money from the school and use that towards rent. You can also get a student loan that covers both tuition and what your rent will cost, and when the money gets disbursed, get a refund of that, too.

Your school probably has a process for that. I suggest you call them and see what their specific policies are. But you can definitely do that.

Your financial aid will not cover living off campus unless the apartment is operated and run by the university then your financial aid will cover dorm costs.

I think it depends on how you are classified. I know that as a grad student I could live wherever I wanted and could get aid for it, so I think if you're independent (over 24, married, or grad student or any combination of those factors) you don't have to be in the dorm to get aid for housing.
