Although Philadelphia is known all over for our cheesesteaks and pretzels, we have other great restaurants all over center city and the surrounding neighborhoods, but if it's cheesesteaks you want I'll give you my opinion. Geno's and Pat are for tourists, if that's what you are looking for then either one is fine, personally I stand by Pats not because of the steak but because he has supported some causes I'm in to. I agree with the other posters these steaks are a bit bland for my taste. If you want a good steak try the neighborhood pizza places. In Northeast Philly there is Steve's and Chink's both pretty good. Delassandro's is in the Roxborough area and tons of people swear by their steaks. There is also Jim's I know that there is one on South Street. Good luck and have fun on our city!

Pat's and Geno's are touristy, but worth the stop. Do yurself a favor and get "socially lubricated" first (drunk). Then, stop in around 1 or 2 am, prepare for a wait, and just absorb all that South Philly and that line have to offer. It'll all be worth it once you get your cheesesteak though. They're both directly across the street from eachother, so you may as well bring an appetite and try both.
Then there's Tony Luke's down on Oregon Avenue, under I-95 by the Walt Whitman Bridge. They're my personal favorite, and a little less assembly line / cookie-cutter than the other two. They also make a mean Roast Pork sandwich...get the sharp provolone and broccoli raab with it.
Other people swear by Jim's on South Street. Kind if ashamed to say as a Philly resident, but I've never been there. I'd think it'd be worth a shot though, since A) it's supposed to be good and B) South Street is some good people-watching turf. Lots to see down there.
Lastly, every single local corner pizza shop makes one. Some are better than others, and some are just plain terrible...you're just going to have to try them all.
You can try these guys if you're floating out beyond the city limits...http://foobooz.com/2007/01/chubbys-or-dalessandros/
