A shelter rescue. It's probably already used to fending for itself, or it wouldn't be in a shelter.

My cat is a domestic short hair (a moggy). I had her when she was 5months old and the woman I had her off said that she was a good mouser. I got her from a house that was near a farm. She's always been a house cat only allowed out in the garden with us, but on the occassions that she's wandered off she has always brought a live mouse back. Our house backs onto fields. Last year she brought a live baby rat back. Have you ever tried to catch a rat while a cat and a dog is also trying to catch it. I'm just glad it wasn't a full grown rat. lol
My cousin has got the sister to my cat and she is also a good mouser too but she only brings dead ones back or just an head.

There is no best cat to catch mice. They either will or they want. I have had a lot of cats that wouldn't touch a mouse and I have a cat now that loves to play with them till they are dead. You get a cat and don't feed him as much as he would like and hope he will substitute his diet with mice..Good Luck..

If you live anywhere near a rural area, check with the local farmers. They don't call 'em barn cats for nothing. If any are willing to part with one of the numerous cats, look for one that is social, or else you'll be sharing space with a very upset feline. As to gender, I've had males and females both that were good mousers. One was a male siamese, but he really just played with the mouse more than anything else. The best mouser I've had I rescued from an adoption center. She'd been stray for a bit, had kittens outside and learned to fend for herself. Word got out quick, and I haven't seen a mouse in this house in about 6 years (I've only had her 6.5 years).

I think most cats are good at catching mice.... I have never had any problem with my cats getting little critters.... I'm not sure if one particular breed is better at this type of hunting than others....
Most cats, I think, just like the thrill of the chase when going after a mouse... keeps them so entertained

tom - out of tom and jerry. Only kidding. Put it this was my mum has 8 cats and about a year back she found 2 field mice in her living room alive still running about!!!! If you have mice invest in a mouse trap most cats just bat them around the room like a toy and never really kill them

Maybe you could find a barn kitty--but definately a regular domestic housecat. Or even adopt a stray from the local Humane Society. They were probably shown by their mother how to take care of themselves and catch things. Ever seen a starving persian? Nope. Unless a cat has been hungry and had to catch its own food they probably would just more play with the mouse than actually kill it - unless they have amazing instincts.
Good luck!

the best mousers are ones whose mom taught them to mouse. Any cat who was with it's mom until several weeks old, and it's mother was a hunter should be fine.
Maybe you can find someone in your neighborhood who's cat is a good mouser and had kittens a few weeks ago.
I wouldn't suggest a purebred. They COULD be good mousers, but they're pampered. A shelter rescue would probably do you good. The best mouser I ever had was a kitten that someone dumped off.
