Schizophrenia can be hard not only on the individual but also on the family. However, there are many resources out there to help give insight and give advice on how to handle situations that may arise. One website to check out is NAMI. This website describes different mental illnesses and articles on how the patient’s illness affects the family. Here is the page on Schizophrenia from NAMI. At the bottom of the page is there is a list of resources and programs available for families. http://www.nami.org/Template.cfm?Section=By_Illness&Template=/TaggedPage/TaggedPageDisplay.cfm&TPLID=54&ContentID=23036
Here is another website that may be helpful. It describes what Schizophrenia is, how it may be treated, the affects on families and has links to other useful information.

The following link lists ways in which ways you can help your loved one and also ways for you to take care of yourself.

Also you can search online for “effects on schizophrenia.” There are many other resources out there as well. Finding a support group may help you and your family cope with your mom’s illness.
I hope this information will help.

Schizophrenia refers to a group of psychotic illnesses characterised by disturbances in thinking, emotional reaction and behaviour. Some call it "split personality" because the sufferer's thoughts and feelings do not relate to one another in a logical fashion. The main form of treatment consists of anti psychotic drugs such as chlorpromazine which reduces the symptom and makes sufferer more more amenable to psycho therapy.Although some 10% of those who develop schizophrenia remain severely impaired for life, 90% can successfully return to varying degrees of independence, and about 30% will return to leading normal lives and occupation, but the particular form of schizophrenia is important in determining the outlook. .
