1st John 3v
8He that committeth sin is of the devil; for the devil sinneth from the beginning. For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that he might destroy the works of the devil. 9Whosoever is born of God doth not commit sin; for his seed remaineth in him: and he cannot sin, because he is born of God. 10In this the children of God are manifest, and the children of the devil: whosoever doeth not righteousness is not of God, neither he that loveth not his brother.

The devil exists because:
1. God allows his existence to fulfill His purpose.
2. The devil tests Christians and non-Christians.
3. Because faith is all bullcrap until you have to either put up or shut up.
Let's face it, the world is full of posers and pretenders. So many people claiming to be things they don't know anything about. The devil is God's tool to flush out the rats.

The purpose of the devil is to bring those down who allow themselves to be brought down by the constant disobediance of Gods laws.
The only way that the devil can affect those who are faithfull is through Gods allowing to be tested and tried in there faith. Testing brings knowledge and growth.
The devil's cause will soon be over once the plan of salvation is complete. Then he will be bound to bother no more. It specifically says in revelation that he will be bound only for a certain amount of time. Then his purpose after that I do not know.

Do you know what your "purpose" is? The devil was created by God as the most perfect angel in Heaven. He became prideful and thought he could take over. God cast him down to Earth along with 1/3 of the angels in Heaven who followed him. He hates God and he hates us because God loves us. So he spends his days trying to keep us from believing in God.
The devil is not some scapegoat to blame when we do wrong things. He is the decieving voice that tempts you to do wrong things and tells you that it will be okay. We have the obligation to resist that temptation. Our sins are our own fault, not Satan's. He didn't do your sin...you did.
So, your answer: The devil's purpose was originally to be the highest angel in Heaven. Now he does the oposit of his porpose in rebellion to God.

Heck if I know!!
I do know that when God created the angels, including the devil, who was once good, He created them with free choice, just as He did humans. God did not create the devil to be evil. He only created him with a free will. Satan took that free will and thought he was better than God who created him. He rebelled against God, took countless angels with him (who later became demons), and he and his demons have been wreaking havoc upon the earth ever since.

In the Miltonian view Satan was first among angels and was charged with the responsibility of arguing all points using reason. His fall from grace after the war in heaven was due to pride of intellect and an unwillingness to accept the pre-eminent position of Jesus in God's order.

to take the blame for anything bad that happens instead of giving credit to the all-knowing Yahweh (I wish there was a symbol for eye-rolling)
