You can trim split ends off yourself in between professional hair cuts. Here's how:
1. Section off your hair when it is dry and pin up your hair.
2. Take a section down & twist it.
3. Split ends will stick out. Trim them off w/ a baby scissor or cuticle scissor. Proceed to next section.
Use a deep conditioning mask at least 1/week. Pantene makes a good one. I recommend Joico K-Pak conditioner. It can be used daily or as a mask.
Keep you hair up in a bun, a chignon or a braid so you cannot fiddle w/ the ends.
Get a short, modern cut to remove all the damaged hair and start over.

You probably do, but i think everyone has a little OCD in them. Just get a trim which is a half of an inch every 6 weeks. No biggy, and you will be split-end-picking free!!!

If you have split ends every once in a while go and get your hair cut, it will look better, and you will stop picking them!

1. Get your hair cut regularly
2. Use a good intensive conditioner one/twice a week
3. If you use heat on your hair, use a heat protection spray
4. Try not to tie your hair back in a ponytail, but if you do, be gentle with it
As you've said its become a habit, the only way of stopping you do it is to get your hair cut to prevent split ends from occurring!

Get your hair cut often so you don't have split ends & better your diet so your folicles aren't so brittle. And it's all mental, so when you catch yourself doing/wanting to do it, do something else with your hands, like hold a pen/pencil.
