Neither do I, I am thinking it was a person with a very intelligent back side.. And it doesn't matter what religion you are or none at all for that matter. There is nothing that as important in life than LOVE. I defy anyone to have their first born laid into their arms for the very first time and not understand that Idea... Jim

In the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy (the only five book trilogy in existence), 42 was presented as the Answer to the Great Question of Life, the Universe, and Everything.
However, the author NEVER revealed the Great Question itself. In fact, the closest he ever came was faulty output of a program which gave the question, "What do you get if you multiply six by nine?"
42 is never presented as the meaning of life, the universe, or anything, only as the answer of the Great Question... the Great Question remains unrevealed.

It's the Answer to the Ultimate Question of Life, The Universe and Everything, as established by Douglas Adams in The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy.

In the book "The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy" "42" is the answer when a computer is asked to come up with the answer to life, the universe, and everything. Then they had to create another computer (the Earth) to come up with the original question. It's a great and very funny book; read it if you have a chance.

Its in a fictional comedic book called "The Hitch hiker's Guide to the Galaxy" by Douglass Adams.
In it, a group of Pan Dimensional Beings (who turn out to be mice) build a Super computer called Deep Thought and ask it the answer to the Ultimate Question of Life, the Univers and Everything, After Millenia of running the program, the computer announces that it has the answer....it is "42".
Ergo the references to "42".

It's from a popular book "Hitchhikers' Guide to the Galaxy" by Douglas Adams. The ultimate answer to the universe was 42... but we never find out the correct question which has that answer.

Read Hitchhikers guide to the universe. 42 is the answer to the why in life according to the greatest computer ever built to figure it out. Good book by the way, kind of subversive like.

It's from a book by Douglas Adams. The Hithchhikers Guide to the Galaxy.
And it's not exactly "the meaning of life", it's actually the answer to the ultimate question. It's the answer "to life, the Universe and everything".
It's a great book, check it out.

42 is the answer to the ultimate question of life, the universe and everything.
However, since that's not a question, it makes no sense until you figure out what the question is.
The bottom line is, what Douglas Adams was saying was that any answer is as good as the next. He was a very "life has no meaning" kind of guy.
Arthur: "That's impossible!"
Trillian - "No, just very improbable."
