You get a job, usually on campus, and you'll see that money as your paycheck. Most of those jobs are for 10-20 hours per week and the pay isn't great but its more convenient than an off-campus job. Your college probably has a webpage listing student jobs. What you want to do depends on what year you are and what your major is. If you're a freshman or in a tough major that takes a lot of study time, look for a job that lets you study if things are slow. If the listing doesn't tell you, ask. Any desk job in the library (circulation, computer center...) or working for an academic department is usually good for this. At my school, the parking lot attendants weren't allowed to study, so watch out for that. If you can, finding a job that relates to your major is a great way to go. I got a work-study job while I was in grad school that was perfect. Well, lousy money but it let me graduate with experience in my field and helped me get a job. So, if you're an upperclassmen or a grad student you may want to talk to your advisor or your department secretary and see if they know of jobs that relate to what you want to do. If you plan to take summer classes, look for a job that has enough funding to keep you on once your money runs out.

If you already have a job that works with your school schedule and pays more than work study jobs do (and you can't spare the time to pick up another job) do let the financial aid office know that you won't be using this money. The funding is limited and apparently the student has to tell them that it won't be used - if you qualify they can't take it away if you're not using it. So, if it isn't going to help you, tell them to pass it on to somebody else. Good luck with school!

Basically, it will come in the form of paychecks. It is the chance to work on campus and build work experience while studying. There are a variety of choices to do the work study program in when it comes to offices.
