Because they pursue material things of this world and not God. ;)
PS: Some even consider their good fortune a reward for good behavior, lol

Well, science shows us the chemical affinities of addiction. Psychology also shows us how we have choices. The Bible is a lesson book of learning to tune in to the "right' nature (as in orthodox, as in healthy). So is the Koran. So are Sanscrit writings.
We all have fears, we all have the propensity to "feed" those fears by pursuing, if you will, darkness, rather than the light.
The very simple (my yoke is easy and my burden is light) universal truth may not be easy (as in just add water and stir). Narrow is the way and straight is the gate. I'm distracted, fall off the path by short cuts and the visible instant gratifications. I need to set my intentions daily, or by the hour. I need to be open to others to better observe and evaluate my own priorities.
In a world filled with great ideas, fabulous inventions, breath-taking discoveries--some people are addicted and/or hungry for what appears to be happiness--in the things that they can see and touch.
Imperialism (invading other countries to have full access to their resources) goes on at all levels. Or the psychology of power. Hoarding (material happiness) is fear based, as so well exemplified by our current administration--or the despot we claimed to have gone after: both were/are going for materialism.
It is not our higher consciousness that drives this. Some interesting sources:

Many people have the idea that if they could drive the fanciest sports car, wear the most expensive designer labels, have the newest electronic game, and eat in the most expensive restaurants they would be happy. To know this isn't so they only need to look to those they are trying to emulate-the celebrities who can afford these things. That is why so many get so stirred up when their favorite celebrity admits to drug use, commits suicide, or gets into legal problems. They have to then admit that those things don't bring happiness.
People need to realize true happiness comes from inside. No external force, neither human nor material, can make you truly happy deep inside. They only bring temporary enjoyment until the next thing catches their eye.

God does meet all of our needs:
Philippians 4:19
But my God shall supply all your need according to his riches in glory by Christ Jesus.
Christians do no pursue happiness throught material things, but through a deeper walk with Christ. All these things are added unto us.
30Wherefore, if God so clothe the grass of the field, which to day is, and to morrow is cast into the oven, shall he not much more clothe you, O ye of little faith?
31Therefore take no thought, saying, What shall we eat? or, What shall we drink? or, Wherewithal shall we be clothed?
32(For after all these things do the Gentiles seek:) for your heavenly Father knoweth that ye have need of all these things.
33But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.
Matthew 6:30-33

They don't get it. Material things are instant gratification and they will never find hapiness through them. God provides for those who are faithfull in their tithe and first fruits.
Pursuit of happiness through any other means than God is destined to fail. No object or person on this Earth will ever fill the God shaped vacuum inside of your heart.

Material things are not NEEDS....
Material things are just a 'bonus'. God never said we couldnt have material possessions, just not to be greedy!

keyword "need". That would be food, shelter and clothing.
Other material things or basic needs in basis to brands or trends are "wants" and does not provide long-term happiness.

Because God is NOT THERE TO give anyone their needs. He is just there to take away what they already have.
