There becomes a point where self pity probably does cross some line, but what to call it is debatable.

For example, God is willing to forgive sins to those who just believe in His son. But there are many who believe in Jesus but think themselves damned for their actions. To study it and understand that it is near arrogance to not accept the forgiveness can be quite mind-boggling, as they say.

It may be that the satanic pride & excessive self love are the folks who just overcompensated when they refused to be beaten down to the point that their self esteem & pride were crushed into near non existence. Both extremes are a hard place to be.
Balance & Equality can get you nearer to the truth that sets you free.

I don't go to the dualistic extreme of labeling everything as "evil" or "good". Low self-esteem, like everything else has causes and conditions which make people feel like that... so each one should be dealt with, with patience, and compassion.

In Buddhist thought, at the most basic level, low self-esteem is considered the opposite of too much self-cherishment, but again, that core of thought arose in a world that wasn't overwhelmed by Western philosophy at that time, so things are being heartily re-evaluated in the Western world now that Buddhism has trickled over here, to make sure nothing's clashing... which so far it isn't, just adjustments are being made to deal with cultural issues that most schools of Buddhist thought hadn't been exposed to like "child abuse", etc....

Low self esteem devalues the object of God's love that He paid a high price for in its redemption. A lack of pride can also devalue what God values by not taking care of God's property - His redeemed object (you). Is it as evil? I would say it comes pretty close because it puts self evaluation above God's evaluation just as Satanic pride and excess self-love put self evaluation above God's evaluation. God expects us to have a balanced view of ourself through His eyes. We are nothing without Him but with Him we are the redeemed apple of His eye!

The opposite of pride is humility, not low self-esteem. In fact, once you become a follower of Jesus and you experience His total acceptance and love, your low self-esteem diminishes as you become stronger in your faith.

Good question! Probably not. Self-flagellation to induce humility has a long history in Christianity.

Christians want every thing to be evil, so they can rant about it.
