I am having knee surgery soon. In the meantime and of course after the operation I am pretty confined to sitting around with ice on my leg. My 8 year old grandaughter lives with me. What kind of activites are good-besides Board Games and the obvious, reading, etc., can we do together that don't require much physical activity? Thanks.

Get some hand craft things to do together, like Beading, or play cards, or word games, like boggle.

I hope everything comes OK in the surgery and get well soon...

As for quiet activities there are puzzles, coloring, watching movies together, arts and crafts, or even looking at old pictures together and even start a scrap book with a good, funny, memories of the family... also she can read to you, learn new thing on -line, play computer games, do homework together.. But you need to rest too, she will have to understand this also she is a big girl and she will be able to help too.... good luck and best wishes ..... I will pray for the surgery to be a success good luck!!!!

My 9-year-old daughters love to make miniature dresses out of fabric scraps. They just use scissors, tape, glue, etc., and make little (6-8" high or so) paper dolls out of cardboard, then trace around the doll onto the pieces of fabric to make the clothes. They decorated the clothes with sequins, ribbon scraps, etc., that they just glued on. They spent weeks doing this every day last summer, having fashion shows, etc.

Another game they really enjoy is Mancala - it is a game with marbles and a wooden board with "dishes" hollowed out in it. They love to play "makeover," where they do each other's hair and put make-up on, etc. (this is usually right before bath time!).

I'm just getting over my third knee surgery in 9 months, so I feel for you. Hope this helps - good luck!

Try doing hair and nails. You could do hers then she could do yours. This way you can spend time together and still have a quiet time. Also try cooking. If you can sit in a chair in the kitchen and tell her what to do then she can take care of the rest and you have a yummy snack. Also mabey try crocheting knitting or another cool craft. This could be a cool activitey and quiet. I loved to do all of things when I was 8 with my grandma and it wasn't that long ago so I hope it helps. Good luck with your knee.

Definitely a craft of some sort. I learned to crochet at that age for just about the same reason. I still love it today.
You could do cross-stitch or needlepoint. And even if you don't know how to do these things, what better time to bond with your granddaughter than to learn together.

Coloring, or my mother in law will start a story and they add a part and then they do, they love it (6 and 8). My 8 yr old also loves to do housework pretend she is the mommy and fold towels, unload dishwasher, I think it makes her feel grown up.

See who can stay the quietest longest. Whoever laughs or talks first loses. See how long you can look at each other without blinking. Might sound kinda corny, but I bet it would make you and the 8 yr. old granddaughter laugh.

I have an 8 yr old also .... I'll just send her over to play with your kid lol

Sorry to hear about your surgery, I hope it goes well. As for things to do, reading stories, helping with her homework ,sewing or knitting, telling her about her family history are all good. They do have video games you both may enjoy.

Those foamy craft shapes. Michaels has a crazy selection of them and they're pretty cheap. Beads are good too.
