As most of the others had said, yes it is possible. You can use a different dish, even a Dish network dish and LNB will work for the main satellite if pointed at a DirecTV satellite. I have a single LNB 18" dish in the garage just for this purpose. I set it up with an empty beer can when I go camping and it works great.
One caveat, however. If you subscribe to your local channels, i.e. NBC, CBS, ABC, FOX, and you use the DirecTV box more than a couple hundred miles away, you will not be able to get your local channels in most cases. This is because the local channels are transmitted on spot beams targeted to specific geographic regions of the US and are reused for local channels elsewhere. The non-local channels will still work fine. You won't get out of town local channels either. Also if your not hooked up to a phone line, you won't be able to order many PPV movies, if any at all. If you have more than one receiver and hook it up to a phone line at someone elses house, DirecTV may think you're sharing your account with someone else so they can just pay the additional receiver fee and not the full package price and then they'd shut off that receiver. I would suggest NOT hooking it up the phoneline if you are away from home, and refrain from ordering PPV's. If you HAVE to you can still order them over the phone by speaking to an agent at 1-800-DIRECTV however there is a couple dollar service charge for this feature.
If you are moving permanently, DirecTV offers the movers service where they'll install a new dish for you at your new house for free. You have to sign a contract (not for very long, 6 or 12 months I think?) in order for them to do it for free.

Actually..you can. However, the second house must have the dish already installed. One of my friends has directv account, he brought the second box to his parents' house and hooked it up and it's ready to go. Of course his parents' house already has the dish installed from the previous owner.
Bottom line is..you are using the same account and the signal from a satelite won't be able to distinguish that there are two different locations. As long as the account is active, the dish can receive signal....Hope this helps...and I know for a fact that it does work.

I have a friend who has 3 DirecTV dishes at 3 different houses and carries his satellite box from one house to the next and hooks it up and it works fine at all 3 places. As long as all the dishes are the same, the receiver will work with them no matter where they are at. I know someone else who takes their box from their house and takes it with them on vacations in their RV and it works for them as well. The RV has it's own dish also.
