Hello

I have a question about boxing gloves. My friend and I are going to buy some gloves do a little sparring. Nothing serious. I was thinking of buying the Everlast Traditional Boxing Gloves from Sports Authority as well as the head gear. I have a question about the gloves. Can you tell me if they are of good quality and how long they would last. Also we dont want to spend too much money because its something we will do only in our spare time. NOTHING SERIOUS

THANKS

MoMo ~
Stay away from Evercrap and Sporting Goods stores unless you only want to use the gloves two or three times and then throw them away. Go to Ringside.com and look and see if they have any specials going on. When it comes to a headgear you really don't want to go too cheap, it's your head we're writing about here MoMo, your head! You wouldn't buy a cheap pair of tennis shoes would you? Ringside will also have the proper headgear for you.

Good luck MoMo.

I personally haven't used any of them but I can say, Century are pretty good for the budget and I just got some new pairs of boxing and bag gloves from TKOgear.com. Great deal and free shipping on many products. Note: They're having a good sale now. They should be reliable enough to keep you interested in the hobby. When you get serious enough, I'm sure you can easily get better gloves at reasonable price. Everlast makes good gloves but the traditional ones are next to fake, so ignore them and get the gloves with good rating. Another place I recommend for boxing stuff with cheap shipping rates is BoxingDepot.com. Good luck! Hope this helps....

As my friend Santana likes to say "stay away from Evercrap, I mean Everlast". It's garbage, Evercrap mass produces the garbage you see at sporting goods stores. They're in it for gross margin only, not to produce a top notch product. I have something else I'd like to say later about sparring in your spare time. Back to the gloves and headgear. Go to ringside.com purchase Reyes equipment or Grant (I've never used Grant but my man Santana says they're product is great and that's good enough for me) equipment, I know you don't want to spend a lot of money but we're talking about you face, hands and more importantly the health of your brain. These two companies offer the best product out there. Grant has a new line of product called Campeon, It's good quality affordable equipment. You didn't mention hand wraps they are necessary to fuse your hand and wrist as one unit. Purchase them. You don't want be breaking a wrist or hand sparring in your spare time. You should spar only in a boxing gym with experienced trainers so things don't get too far out of hand. if you and your friend are competitive, regardless of how tight you guys are it can get heated, real heated very quickly if you're not supervised. Then somebody could get hurt. If you are inexperienced in the sport you will want to at least learn some of the basic defensive and offensive skills from a BOXING trainer not some one who teaches aerobic boxing classes, they don't have a clue. Hope this helps. Peace

Personally, I think it's just a different kind of pain. MMA gloves have a more concentrated and sharp pain. Boxing gloves make more of your head hurt, but it's not as sharp.

The blogbaba was so poor when he was coming up he used the scabs on his knuckles for gloves. Nobody's really old school any more, most of us have died. We never even considered that there was a choice, we used what we had. It must be great to be young. Go with Reyes, for the price they are the best.

Sup weekend warrior,

Don't listen to those other guys about getting Grant/Cleto Reyes gloves. They're just being elitist. On the other hand, they are right that Everlast gloves suck ***. They don't fit your hands tightly and tend to be a bit too big (it's like fighting with pillows). Since you're just doing it on your spare time, then just go with these $29.99 Ringside ones.

If you get serious, move up to these nice 16 oz. Ringside Mexican style gloves ($49.99):

If you want to compete in serious amateur/pro fights, THEN go for the Reyes gloves at $120 a pop:

As for headgear, the type really doesn't matter much at all at your level. Headgear does nothing to protect against concussions. They are only good for protecting against cuts and eye lacerations. These Fight Gear ones ($29.99) should suffice:
