Well when the average lifespan is 40 years old and most kids are dying before age 3 and you don't have any technology or even knowledge of sanitation - the Romans might come and put you into slavery or hack you up.. you gotta come up with SOMETHING to give you some hope. What better than the notion that you can't be killed because if you just do a simple personal act you get to live forever? You may kill my body but you can't kill me!
Some people say that there are no atheists in foxholes. They say that as proof that God exists. I take it more that when people are under great distress - their brains instictive reach out for some force that will help them. And this reaction is similar to when we're babies - we cry out and a nice parent usually comes by and helps us out. So people create a God to reach out to as they would a parent.

You are absolutely right, but that doesn't make the Bible "wrong." All those thing in the Bible happened, but not exactly in the way the writers depicted them. Even today there are people who claim God caused the recent hurricane in New Orleans because of the sinning happening there.
We can learn much from the Bible especially when read in conjunction with history from neighboring cultures and with the newest archaeological finds. Scholars are able to pin down exact time frames and can study what was happening at the time the Bible was written. They can determine how many people wrote different parts of the Bible and when. Google some Biblical archaeological sites -- there is much to learn!
The Tanach (OT) is basically stories about the relationship between God and His people, Israel. They were all written by the victors and have many biases.

Well keep in mind that "the BIBLE" didn't exist until relatively recently in history. It is really 66 little books written over a span of many centuries (I'm fudging cus I don't remember the exact number right now). And there were other teachings they could have set their heart and mind to.
Also it doesn't matter what language WE speak, the Bible was originally written in Hebrew, Greek and Aramaic, the common languages of the day.

I am one of those people who believe the Bible is the only book containing Gods' word. I can think of no other book in history that has been read and believed by so many people for the period of time that it has. There have been many books written on every subject and we read them to make our lives better and they don't. Some don't like Christians' because they feel we believe we are better than them and that is usually not true. I believe that God gave us a road map for living as good a life as we possibly can on this earth, The Bible! I also believe that the laws God put on His people were right, however, because, we as people are not perfect, we cannot keep those laws. I believe that Jesus was the answer for us all.

Evolution was in a book, and people have no factual evidence for it yet they readily believe apes turned into human beings. The Bible is based on historical accurate information as witnessed by The Roman government, The Jewish government of Jesus day, and by several thousand eyewitness. The Bible is not some mere tale but rather the history of the beginning of the world, where we came from and why we are here. Just because you don't understand history, doesn't mean it did not happen. I wasn't there when George Washington crossed the Delaware River, but some people claimed he did . I wasn't there.....but i have to believe it happend based on someone Else's claims.

Actually, the bible was written to be proof of Jesus being the messiah. People already had a book. Before that, people already made up beliefs. The bible isn't the first book of the world's first religion.
The New Testament was written to show that Jesus is the messiah. This is why the authors purported that you must believe in him to go to heaven. Before Jesus and his followers, people believed in god without the middle management.

No. I think the bible is much more than that. I mean, I do not think the bible is infallible or absolute, e.g. I would not attempt to cure someone's leprosy (Hanson's Disease) with ashes and the blood of two doves as directed by Leviticus. I know that is not medically accurate.
BUT I do believe the bible is inspired by Divine forces and contains wisdom, historical fact and of course the all important gospels about Jesus Christ, whose life and death, I believe to be the most important aspect of the bible.

You are correct that the Bible is a book that was written a long time ago. It has 66 smaller books inside it by over 40 authors, written over a period of 1500+ years.
It tells the story of dozens of people who encountered God in their normal lives and were altered by it. From great kings seeking to wisely rule a nation, to a young widow simply seeking to survive and find love. The stories are told through eyes and personalities of the many authors.
Yet it is remarkable in the unite of themes, doctrines, and images that run through it. Each book builds on the revelations from the books before it and foreshadow more truths to come. It contains passages like Psalms 22, written 1000 years before the time of Jesus, yet contains over 25 events that happened at the crucifixion - his words, the words of his enemies, the piercing of his hand and feet, the decision not to break his legs, the way he would die by suffocation, the soliders gambling for his clothes, and more. Things that the author of the Psalm could not possibly have known.
It is in languages that are not know TO YOU. But realize that recorded human history covers a period of over 6000 years. The English language as only been around for about 450 years, or about 8% of that time. While the Hebrew language of the Old Testament has been in use since before 2700 BC and is still in use today. The Greek (New Testament language) has been in around since before 800-900 BC and is still in use today. If you wanted to write a book for most of mankind to understand, would you use a language that would only be around for 8% of history, or one that has been around for the majority of history? There are many excellent and reliable, accurate translation of it available. Or, you can learn the original languages and read it in the Hebrew and Greek (as I did).
The Bible is not a book that people decided to believe in. Rather it is the history of people over centuries who believed in God and recorded their faith, struggles, doubts, questions, answers, miracles, and more for us to help us in our own quest to know God.

You are wrong. The Bible isn't "just a book." It's actually 66 books written by dozens of authors over a period of hundreds and hundreds of years. And despite all that, there is not one contradiction between any of the books. Think you could repeat that feat with just 10 authors alive today?
