You can transplant a tree any time, but some times are better than others. Don't plant in the heat of the summer unless you've got a real good watering system. The best time is when they are dormant, December to March, when they will not "feel" the transplant shock. Of course if the ground is frozen do it sooner or later. To keep them from dehydrating until they get some new roots, use a wax that seals their pores to prevent water loss, like Wilt Pruf. Don't use much fertilizer, it causes them to try and grow faster than their cut roots can handle. You could toast them.

Generally Fall, not Spring. You want the plants to benefit from the rain to establish their roots. If you plant in the Spring, the trees will be concentrating on putting out new leaves and will not develop a solid root system before summer comes. the lack of roots in the warm weather will seriously stress the plant.

it really depends on the kind of tree. you can plant them pretty much any time, the important thing to remember is to keep the roots from freezing. in the winter that is where most of the important nutrients and water is stored. in spring new growth of vessels in the plants are produced so that new cells can be made to add to the plant and make it bigger. that does not happen until there is more light in the spring and summer to allow for them to produce energy through photosynthesis. so as long as you protect the roots you can plant anything but there will not be any new growth really until the spring

To me, its always fall planting, this give the root system a chance to grow and establish, early spring is good ,if it gets spring rain, but if a early drought or you have no time to care for it,it could go through stress, inviting insects on your new planted tree, and sometimes not surviving the heated months, this is especialy in evergreens, pines ,spruce

plant trees in the fall, especially friut trees. This Allows them time to get adjusted to their new surroundings before they try to flower in the spring. Some go dormant in the winter months, so transplanting is less stressful.
