You can't turn them off.
just right click on the icon and press delete.
You can put them back by going to all programs and drag them back into task bar.
In case you want for the task bar to disappear, just right click on task bar, chose property . click on "Task bar tab". Uncheck " Show Quick Launch"
If you are talking about icon close to the clock, right click on task bar, then property, then customise, then click on arrow " hide when inactive". Choose " always hide or always show or hide when inactive.

you can't turn off your "active icon" in your "taskbar", but you can hide in your system tray. I believe you meant "system tray". System tray is the small area that sits next to the clock, the taskbar is the bar that runs along the bttom between Start and system tray. To turn off any active icon in your system tray, right click your empty taskbar, select properties, click customize, click on any program you want to hide, select the drop box, choose "always hide", then OK, OK to exit.

You should go to the public library and get a good book covering your operating system (whatever that might be). I like "The Complete Idiot's Guides" (which are good for people without much knowledge about a subject) and "The Dummies Guides" (which are good for people who need to solve a problem quickly).
