She is a Boston Terrier and she had said that she had bought her from the dogs original owners. Brownie had her tags on her collar so we called the vet clinic, which happens to be the same one we use for our cats, to ask about general health and whether she is up to date on shots and such. The vet told us that she has allergies and needs antihistamines and steroids and a special allergen free food, all of which is fine, we are taking her in on Tuesday to get the meds and food, but I am curious about the meds. I will ask the vet on Tuesday as well, but for any of you who give your dog allergy meds, how often are those administered, daily, weekly? I have never owned a dog with allergies before so i am not to sure how it works. Or is it different for every dog? Thanks for any help or advice you could give us!

It works on a completely case-by-case basis. I have a dog with allergies, and we give him a pill once a week. I have clients who have to give allergy meds twice a day. And often in the dogs life, the dosage and time frame will be changed. It will depend on the type and severity of the allergy, and also they type of drug used. Your vet will be able to explain this to you and tell you your options with different drugs and such.

yes,it is different for every dog and depends on what they are allergic to and which meds work best for them. most allergy pills are given either daily or every other day. Since you know the previous owner I would ask them about daily care also as in did they have better luck with metal dishes over plastic and which treats did not cause a reaction in the dog, shampoo products etc. they had to find this out thru trial and error and it will save you much time and money not to mention avoiding discomfort to the dog if you can avoid the stuff that irritates the dog. Ask the dr if the allergies are all food related or are they outside allergies as well. Are the outside allergies(if any) seasonal or year round. Ask what the dogs specific symptoms are(what the skin eruptions look like etc) so that you will have some idea of what is happening when you go thru a bout with her. You can do this....best of luck.

We have a few dogs that are on allergy medication here at our clinic.

One is on an allergy medication protocol. The get one shot from one vial on one week, another shot from another on the second week, the third from the third vial.

There are others that come in once a week and once every two weeks for their allergies.

It would be dependant on the types of allergies and what kind of medication the doctor has them on.

Good luck with your new dog.

My dog(Golden Retriever) has allergies, kind of a doggie Hay Fever. She goes on steroids in the spring and summer, and we had to give them to her every day in the begining, then it went to every other day when he allergies weren't so bad. I think it's diferent for different dogs depending on severity of the allergies, size of dog, type of medicine, etc. If you have a good vet s/he should tell you everything you need to know! Good luck!

Good feedback you've gotten---if you have multiple animals you might consider petmeds.com if you're running a high vet bill, once the meds are "dialed in" for your dog---this could get expensive. If there's a significant price difference, then, unless you can easily afford it, tell your vet what is going on and offer to split the difference---it'll make fow less hard feelings when the vet says, no, I can't do that.

I do believe it depends on the type of allergy, the size of the dog, and the severity of the allergy. The vet will tell you everything, though. Don't worry.

i believe it's daily unless stated to split the dose for morning and night.

my sister inlaw gives the dog his meds at night with dinner. she puts it on top and she eats it really fast.

That would be a great question to ask the vet.
