My staffy suffers with sore red paws and under his front legs and is also red and sometimes very sore. He had an allergy test and preventative injections, but nothing has worked. The vet wanted to keep giving him steriods but was not happy with this. He dosen't let it bother him unless it is bad - I have tried numerous creams nothing works. Has anyone got this problem and if so any suggestions for helping him.

I have a nearly 7 year old lovely staff called Jezabel, and she often gets sore paws as we go on the pebbly beach quite a lot. Last week she had licked and licked her paw, so I took her to the vet where she had antibiotics and steroids. However, he said that a cream like Sudacreme (usually for baby's nappy rash) is quite a good barrier. May be worth a try.
Lovely dogs though aren't they!!

My retriever chewed and scratched himself for 2years, we had all the tests done, put him on a strict diet, got rid of carpet in the house in case of wool allergy, because he was OK on the top half of his body and he was only sore on his feet, arm pits, chest, the vet was convinced it was an allergy to something he kept coming into contact with, we even changed where we went for walks. Benedryl one a day 'human' allergy tablets helped but wasn't the answer. Eventually i realised it was his bedding, i washed and gave him fresh bedding weekly..... he was allergic to the enzymes in the washing powder. So i now wash his bedding without wash powder on a 60 degrees wash, this is hot enough to kill anything horrid as well. It did take about 4 wks to see a big change, but 6months on and its still getting better, he's started to grow hair between his toes again!! bless.

Get zinc oxide cream from the baby section of the pharmacy. Usually it's listed for baby rash. It's a protective ointment, and also helps with healing, and it's non-toxic. Rubbing a sore spot with zinc oxide twice a day should help heal the skin.

I use it on my beagles paws when winter salt bothers her.

If i was you i would go and get him some of the dog boots for his paws as that may well help him when he is out walking but as for the sores under his arms maybe you should try and look on the Internet under herbal and see if there is anything there that might help him. best of luck.

With allergies, there is no cure, you can only manage it as best you can. Firstly, he should be on a hypoallergenic diet, and this should be constant. Do not feed him any other treats that may have ingredients he could be allergic to.

Avoid grass, as this can really irritate feet and paws, avoid carpet cleaners, air sprays, do not wash his bed in anythign other than plain hot water, any detergents can irritate him.

Although you are not keen on steroids, they are useful for when he is really suffering.

Good luck

my friends dog was run over by a car and sometimes gets red sores in places where his skin rubs against skin and not hair. they solved it by using something called Muron Cream the only problem is that his was a few years back and i'm not sure if the cream is still available. i recommend you look for this cream and try it if they still sell it. if not sorry for waisting your time and good luck in finding a solution!

Be guided by your Vet! Steroids are the correct treatment for skin complaints. After all why did you go to him in the first place if you are not going to take his advice?
I would caution you that there are not many human remedies that are suitable for dogs before you go trying all sorts of things on your dog!

Try another vet. It could be he is reacting to the food you are feeding him. By the way, what is a
Staffy? I have never heard of a animal called this.
